Cymbal chokes (with midi/step clips)

I'm using the built-in Drum Sampler for drum parts (it's adequate to my needs and I want to use my own samples). Now I know I can create a modified note assignment for a cymbal choke, but I'm wondering if there's a way to do it with Midi CC, or anything other options? All my samples for now are One Shots and I don't want to change this.
