Punch in error / bug - please prove me wrong

I'm having a fit trying to punch in a midi section in a track.
I've got the I/O markers set to a 6 bar section in the middle of my song, bar 50 to the end of bar 55, to be exact.
I want to start playback at about bar 48 to let myself get the feel in that section, so I put the cursor at 48:1:000 via the time display/entry box in the lower right.
when I hit R, or click the record button, it starts playback way back in the song.
What am I doing wrong here, or is this a bug? It's driving me nuts.
Also, I'm having some difficulty getting the Clipboard 'paste inserting at cursor position' to work on the first try.
When I do this, it will paste at an arbitrary location, I delete that pasted clip, then repeat the 'paste inserting at cursor position' and it will then paste at the cursor position.
Please help.

Punch in - Have you got count in turned on for a set number of bars? If so, when you hit record you'll start that number of bars before your marked area

Yes I do have punch in turned on so that the click track will start 2 bars before; but what is happening, is that the startup will go back perhaps 30 or 40 bars into the beginning of the song!!!
Yet another bug which is happening is that I can't seem to get rid of the content of clips that I've previously recorded in the punch-in section. they attach themselves to the previous clip that ends at the start of the punch-in; I split that clip to eliminate the punch-in I don't want, and then delete and remove it from the edit.
but when I finally do get to punch in again (after waiting sometimes for 30 bars for T to get to the right location, then when I audition the new section, there are all the old notes there?
I do not have loop turned on and my midi input device is set to replace notes, not to merge them with any pre-existing notes.

Any help on this one? Has anybody experienced anything like what I described?

Punch In is hardly useable at the moment. I wrote Jules about this recently and he confirmed that he is going to improve it for T2. So let's hope for the best.
Chico has given you a very valuable hint though - see under 'click track -> pre-record count-in lenght'.
Cheers, Pädy

1. Can't splice since it appears that T is 'remembering' clips that I have deleted and removed from the project - it's very strange.
2. I turned off count-in for the click track. The problem remains.
3. In a related problem, I'm having difficulty forcing T to start recording at any certain location. I've turned off punch-in, and forced the cursor to the beginning of the song in the bar/beat locator in the transport controls in the lower right of the screen, to record a new track. For whatever reason, T will start at bar 5:1:180 or something (where a different clip starts on a different track).
I'm about to pull the plug on T, because this is just driving me crazy.

scott first off, dont pull the plug. This program is probably as good as it gets. Take it a step at a time. You can splice look in the hotkeys section in options. I assigned mine to / because its pretty simple and makes sense to me. You align your cursor to the spot on the clip you want, then pull it back with the arrows. It's very simple and you can do a lot with it.
Concerning your "extra files", be aware of how it handles files. In a project folder, it will contain references to files. If you say dont like a cut you just made on a track, you can simply right click it and put remove from track and delete file. If it's too big a mess I'd recommend to go through it patiently. Once you understand how and why it works, youll see how good it is.

When I don't like a take on a clip, I highlight that clip and ask T to delete it AND remove it from the edit.
but when I punch back in, it records what I just played on top of the old clip that I deleted from the project - those old events are in the clip.
Also,
Can you explain the other strange cursor behavior on recording - why T won't start recording where the cursor is located (I've disabled count in)? It will usually line up the cursor to a spot where a clip on a different track is located.
I'm very confused.
I have already had good success with T:
www.nowhereradio.com/scottlake
click on the discography section. I tracked those 3 songs in Tracktion, before this strange behavior started. Actually it's just 2 songs where one is before and after I got a bunch of constructive criticism on the first version.
But I can't find anyone that can figure out what is going on in my edits now. I've had this post out there for almost a week and I can't find anyone who says 'yeah, T was doing that for me and here is how to make the problem go away'.

I just read through this trhread for the first time - Ron, don't waste your time in trying to give the man hints - he's an experienced user and Tracktion most obviously simply performs a serious bug - that's all
- I never experienced something similar but hey - I could start trying to describe you some of the strange bugs I've been experiencing.
I think there's only one cure for your problem:

I can't speak at all for punch-in, I'm a enter the crap by hand monkey.
If it did work, and now it doesn't, and you haven't installed a new version, rolled back a version, or altered anything in the config tnen something is getting messed up in the edits.
Eitherway Jens is right, send Jules an email describing the problem and the steps to replicate it.

Thanks for the heads-up, though I can't get it to do the jumping-back thing here.. any more clues that might help me replicate it? If you want to send me the edit I could take a quick look.
About the midi clip merging, did you spot the options in the midi input device's properties that let you either merge it in or create new clips?

I might just send you the edit, since it is midi only at this point in time.
Regarding midi clips, I have it set so that it creates a new clip, not merging data with an existing clip.
Regardless, the 'old' clip should be completely removed from the universe, but the data keeps coming back in.
When I get back in front of T, I will duplicate the problem and send you the edit.
Do you need the plugins that I am using? Right now, it's sfz with the big ns piano sound font.
I also cannot figure out why I cannot force recording to start at the cursor position I enter in the lower right. I think these problems are somehow related.
Could it possibly be a snapping bug? I've noticed that sometimes, where T decides that it wants to start recording, is where a clip on a different track has it's starting location.
I'm also one of those guys that gets the ghosted recording progress bar showing up on a separate track other than the intended, selected track.
