We all have our favoured hosts – but this poll is not for the favourite - it is about the host you pull up most to get the job done.

It’s to see what the balance is like at K-v-R at this time now.

The list is a mix of audio heavy (mainly effect hosts) or virtual instrument heavy hosts and a blur between the two.

I have chosen the main brand name – though sub classes may exist under or above it

The poll will run for five days - covers the weekend and next week, so it remains like a time stamp of current use. maybe run another poll in six months to see how things pan out if at all.

Best regards,

doesn't it only host AU's?

and to make an AU, you gotta get Apple's permission, and have them assign you an AU vendor code?

which can and has taken months, delaying the development and release of plugins?

doesn't seem any more 'open standard' than ReWire, in fact, to these eyes, arguably less

Voted for the one I use most, but two other programs not in the list deserve mentions. Don't know whether they qualify as "hosts" in your book, but here goes.

I generally use Sonar to do actual "work" (ha ha), and that's how I voted. Been using Cakewalk since the mid-90s, and learned the principles on a friend's machine in the early DOS days. To me the staff is a comfortable old friend; the piano roll is for tweaking. Comes from having been educated in ye olden dayes before electronick musick becayme popular.

I also like Ableton Live 4, but am not nearly as familiar with it or fluent in it. It's a very nice way of working, though, and tends to increase my odds of producing something that I, at least, don't mind listening to.

For noodling around without recording, or just for loading a synth that doesn't have a stand-alone version, brainspawn forte is just the ticket. It's made for live performance use, but with my poor musical skills I can't actually play live. :-)

Another vote for Live 4.0.4

Come on, Sonar people -- we need to make our number 20%-40% higher than Cubase! ;-)

[edit] Ooops, I mean Nuendo. And we already are 20%-40% higher... so, uh... good job! *sa-LUTE*

As always I seem to be stuck with the trustworthy Cubase 5.1 (though ext may fight for that position here on my system)

Sonar PE 3.1.1 for me with Fruity Loops Studio 5 PE coming second. Live 4 and Tracktion still haven't got me the way I hoped they would. Note that I am loving Overture + Forte Ensemble hosting GPO/Kontakt for scoring a whole bunch. I can load a whole orchertal palette and score at low latency. :D 8)
