Hi Everyone,
I've been lurking in this forum for a while, and have actually bought a copy of Tracktion. I got tracktion because it gives good performace on an old iBook, (G3 700). i've also got cubase 1.5 on here , but Tracktion looks so much nicer, and i'd like to use it.

I've got one question. When I turn on the click, and play along, (somthing really simple), the playback is out of sync with the click. Is there anything I need to set up to avoid this, as it makes it difficult to do any serious multitracking.

My setup is: iBook G3 700, m-audio FastTrack USB
I use the direct monitoring on the FastTrack, so I don't have any record latency.

Thanks for your help guys! I quite enjoy the posts by all you groundhoggers.

What is the latency on the sytem?
Look in the Settings tab of Tracktion.

Can you lower it to lets say 5 ms?
My guess is that you monitor the input in real time but you play to a click that is delayed.
All sounds well in monitoring but when you play back the recorded result it's out of sync

The FastTrack is supported by CoreAudio in OS10.3, I can control the latency, but when I bring it too low, it overwhelms the system. Any suggestions?

I want to make sure I'm understanding you before I give advice:

-You turn on the 'click' track and press 'record'. Then you're playing... say... guitar. The guitar you hear through your speakers is delayed from your real-time playing and therefore is not locked to the 'click'. Is that correct?

-What happens AFTER you record? Is it then in sync during playback?

-If the playback (output) latency is too 'delayed' to play in realtime without distraction, you need to look into direct monitoring options. "Direct Monitoring" is just an industry way of saying, "I want to hear my instrument BEFORE it goes through the audio card and sequencer".

The best form of direct monitoring is to just listen to yourself play. ;) Turn off "end-to-end" and you won't hear your instrument through the computer. But it'll be there when you play back.

NOW, if you're talking about real-time playing with soft instruments (virtual synths), then you're going to run into problems because you cannot direct monitor. By virtue of the fact that it HAS to be processed by the computer and go through D-A conversion before you can hear it in your speakers, there WILL be latency.

I guess I should have asked more questions (as I originally intended) instead of providing shot-in-the-dark solutions.

* are you recording audio or MIDI through softsynth?
* what are your hardware options (soundcard, mixer, speakers, etc)?

I am using direct monitoring, so I have no record latency, when I play guitar it sounds perfectly in time.

The interface is an M-audio FastTrack, which has coreaudio support. It is when I play back that things sound behind the beat. I can play perfectly along with the click or a pre-recorded track, but when I play back, it sounds behind the beat.

i usually use Nuendo 2 with a 2408 system (which I have no problem using with T) at the studio, I'm just trying to get the home demo rig going here. I don't know if it's a tracktion problem, m-audio problem, or me being new to both problem.

thanks

OK, thanks for the excellent clarification. Unfortunately, it's going out of my realm of knowledge, so I'm no help to you. :(

i should mention this is all audio, not midi. i have noticed a feature wherein Tracktion asks you to connect the output of the soundcard to the input, in order to take a measurement. I haven't had to do this on my PC system, but is this something that I should be doing in general?

I'm new to Trackion also, and had to get the time adjustment correct for my Mbox in order to get my recordings in time.

Thanks all!
It was a combination of finding a buffer setting that didn't cause clicks and pops, and then using the feature in T to adjust for record delay. Should have known it would be that easy, I guess I was expecting MOTU performace from a $100 m-audio USB card.
You guys rock,
Julian
