Hi all,
So I played around with Tracktion, got it to record a couple of audio tracks at the same time for a few minutes, so far so great. Decided to take my laptop to a gig, miked up all the instruments and hence had 12 tracks to record. Hooked it up, assigned the tracks, did a test recording of a minute or so, all is well. Set it to run. Accidentally double click the record button, Tracktion freezes up and all goes belly up. By now I have to be on stage, so decide to try again the second set. Select record with the shortcut, it all shows as recording. When the set is done, press stop. Save. Then go to close Tracktion, it hangs. Thinking it may need a bit of time to think about it, I leave the laptop whilst packing up. Half an hour later, it is still thinking about it. Need to go home, so close it all down. Check it the next morning to see how the recording went, it's got nothing, other then 30 seconds of the first set. I've tried the same with a friend's Cubase SX, no problems, it writes as it records.
Tracktion doesn't seem to do the same? I'm just doing a plain audio recording, not using any FX, filters, nothing, I want to apply all that after recording.
If anyone could shed some light on this (I must obviously be doing something wrong, all of you are raving how great it is) I would be eternally greatful.
Thanks a bunch,
Kaz

You on PC or Mac?
Whats your audio interface?
What drivers are you using?

Hi,
My laptop is:
PC, 2.8Ghz P4, 512Mb ram, running Windows XP Home
My audio interface is the Mackie Onyx 1640 desk with Firewire interface, which has it's own Asio driver. I got the Tracktion software with it and installed as per the booklet that came with it. It all works fine, up to the point where I try to save the 45 to 50 minute long audio tracks...
Let me know if you want any further info!
Cheers,
Kaz

I've got to say, I've never done anythign approaching a 45 minute recording, so maybe tracktion has a glass ceiling somewhere, but assuming no bugs for the time being:
one thing that sometimes causes lost recordings is if the filenames have unusual characters or such in them, or the directory being written to is unwritable. Also always ensure that your audio is not being wrtten out to the Tracktion temporary folder (this is really important) as anything there will be deleted when Tracktion is closed!

under 'settings' -> 'miscellaneous' you can set in what temp-folder Tracktion puts the audio-material when recording.
By default it is afaik somewhere in your Tracktion directory... (can anyone confirm this?)
One minute of stereo audio 16bit/44khz has a file-size of 10mb.
Thus 45min 16bit/44khz would be 450mb
24bit/44khz=675mb
24bit/96khz=1.15gb
32bit/44khz=900mb
32bit/96khz=1.8gb
Your Onyx support 192khz, doesn't it?
To what sample-rate have you set it?
32bit/192khz would be a file with a size of 3.6gb.
Thus the file you wanted to record has, depending on your settings, a size between 450mb and 3.6gb
- is there enough free disk-space on the partition the temp-folder resides in?

Thanks for all the replies.
I have 20Gb of free disk space, and as said did record successfully with Cubase with even more tracks. It took up about 5.5 Gig if anyone's interested in that bit of detail
I believe I only have one driver installed, but could be wrong as I'm at my day job at the moment and have no access to my laptop. I'll check that when I get home. The naming of files is an interesting one, I'll keep that in mind, but I seem to remember I used a pretty standard naming convention. I'll double check on all of this when I get home.
Any thoughts on why it would throw a wobbly when clicking record in quick succession?
Should it be writing whilst recording, or would you expect some 'saving time' at the end?
Again, thanks to all of you for your help!

I never though to check, but I'd be *amazed* if ity didn't write out progressively.flyingdutchbird wrote: Should it be writing whilst recording, or would you expect some 'saving time' at the end?
You'd expect to see some period of busy time after stopping recording whilst Tracktion builds a peak file and updates the edit. Even for long tracks this shouldn't be more than a few moments though. (I have imported plenty of large audio files into Tracktion).
As for crashing on double record, sounds like a bug. If you can replicate it then email jules.
