How can I route MIDI in to both VSTs and MIDI out?

This is for a live performance situation. I'd like to be able to control both hardware and software synths from the same controller. I can set the output from the track to either audio, so I get the softsynth output or to MIDI out to control my hardware synths. Is there anything I am overlooking or another way around this?

Use a rack filter to branch out the MIDI to a secondary track, and set its output to the desired MIDI out port. See www.adbe.org for info on rack filters... Although the main discussion is about branching audio, rack filter can pass MIDI as well :)
