Trimming MP3 files

God knows which forum I should put this in ... apologies.

What is the best way of trimming an MP3 file? Obviously I could load the original MP3 into a wave editor and trim it and then resave it as a new MP3, but obviously this involves decoding and reencoding it, which I don't want to have to do for quality reasons.

I have seen a free program called MPTrim, which will trim the MP3 directly with no decoding/reencoding, but it only deals with files up to a certain length. I'm talking 3 hour files here, and the version of MPTrim which deals with large files is not free.

Hopefully someone will have some ideas...
