Tracktion without Admin Grants on WinXP Prof.?

Hi!

Just happened: ATM I prepare my PC to keep away from the Admin account for security reasons. So I created a separate "limited user" account with the usual restrictions (e.g. denywriteaccess on the 'program files' folder; and so on...) for my everyday-business, internet-access, and music.

Although T creates a folder for user data in the designated "Application files" folder, I repeatedly got the following error message by T:

Error writing to user-settings file: C:\Programme\Tracktion\CurrentUserSettings.trksettings

So T requires write-access to the programs-folder? Or can I tweak this behaviour somewhere in the settings?

:?

As Admin, right-click on the file, and select properties.

Now select the 'Security' tab. The dialogue you see shows specic access rights for that file. You should be able to 'Add' your limited user account, then 'Allow' permissions for Modify.

Ive not tested this, btw, but it should work unless the denial of access to the Progams folder takes priority; unfortunately Im not quite sure if it does.

Shit, I exactly *know* what you mean, but I can't remember if it's true for XP, too! Either XP handles grants a little different or soemthing on my PC is totally screwed up. The "security tab" simply doesn't exist - although I can remember the tab on W2k systems. :?

In the meantime I've set an extra account for music without network-access but with more user privileges.

But more generally speaking: a "modern" program which was designed for multi-user operating systems should respect the security restrictions. It undermines the overall security if Tracktion forces (at least some?) users to run their system with advanced privileges. Couldn't be so hard to write CurrentUserSettings into the appropriate "application data" folder.

Or am I wrong?

Nevertheless: Thank you whyterabbyt for pushing me into deeper areas of WinXP user account administration... :D

It's there.

XP's security model is more or less the standard NT4 version. IE the inverse of the *nix model.

If you can see the tab when you select properties for a file, ensure you are running with admin rights high enough to change them.
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!

Hmmm - good point, I guess I'll move that file somewhere more sensible for T2..

That's what confuses me most: Actually I *AM* Administrator at that time when I'm looking for the tabs! I'm logged in with the "hidden" administrator account of XP Prof. :?

Well, strange behaviour of strange machines... But in this special case Jules is now aware of the problem. That's finally good news.

Bye

J.
