Stepchild question

Hey, I've been having fun messing around with Stepchild, thanks ModuLar! I'm not exactly sure what the Drag and DRop button is supposed to do, but when I click on it it completely locks my system. I have to do a hard reboot to get back. No real problem, I just avoid that button, but I wondered if anyone else had this problem. I did a quick search here and didn't see any mention of it.

if it's locking up your system, then you've got Real Time Priority Mode turned on in Tracktion. Turn it off, and the lockups should stop. I think it's best to leave RTPM off unless you really find a valid reason to have it on. BTW, that button will create a midi clip from the pattern you create... so you can eventually ditch stepchild if need be. Just drag from the button, to the track.
hope that helps!

Thanks Edelweiss (that name brings back memories, my dear mom used to sing me that song to put me to sleep--I'll have to try it with my 2 year old). I do indeed have RTPM on. I will turn it off and try.

I have a quick, and probably stupid question, too...
I use the drag 'n' drop and ditch stepchild as described... partly because I couldn't figure how to automate the pattern changes in the main Tracktion window. I assume this can be done in a similar way to Reason's ReDrum pattern changes for example. I just haven't figured out how...

I don't know why I made the pattern trigger not user adjustable
, but...
if "C3" is defined as middle C in tracktion, then C2 = pattern #1, C#2 = pattern #2, etc.
"C4" = middle C, then C1 = pattern #1, etc.
"C5" = middle C, then C0 = pattern #1, etc.

Oh right, I getcha. I'll give this a whirl.
And let me add my thanks to you for a great little utility - makes up for something missing in Tracktion.
It will be interesting to see whether T2's MIDI editing still begs for Stepchild as an add-on or whether pattern sequencing will be covered - I get the impression I'll still be using Stepchild, but time will tell.

Regs, that's exactly where I got the name from....that and it's the name of my favorite wine...
BTW, Mod, thanks again for "Stepchild" it happens to be my most used VST. Drum patterns, fills, bass lines, Arps....I haven't found anything out there that is as fast and easy...
I just have to remember that measure 1 always falls in a odd measure and measure 2 always falls in a even measure....but that's just me....LOL

Please forgive this ignorant question; I'm still learning. I hope I don't offend anyone.
What can you do in Stepchild that can't be done with the pencil tool in the Tracktion MIDI editor?

nothing really... it just depends on how you work. Some folks like step sequencers. I enjoy using them for basic level drum work. Like how people pound out drumming ideas with Fruity Loops. It's just an easy way to throw ideas together.
Also, if you are building a synth part or something along those lines.. you can have stepchild sitting there looping your pattern while you work on a non-loop segment... and you can easily switch patterns to continue working on a different part.
Kinda lets you combine tracktions linear arrangement style with a pattern based one.

I've started playing with Stepchild and it is much easier to use than the pencil tool. Thanks ModuLR! Some more questions...
1.Let's say I have a pattern entered. When I click on the numbers (for additional patterns?), my pattern goes away. Do I have to use drag 'n' drop first and save it to a track?
2. Can I have more than one pattern playing at a time? For different channels, layers, etc.
