Transposing incoming midi?

Hi gang,
Just making the move from Tracktion from Cubase VST (I'm on a G4 Mac, OS X 10.3.7) and I was wondering if there was an easy way to transpose incoming midi.
I have an M-Audio O2 for my laptop and it has an octave transpose button. That works great - but for my desktop I'm using my old ESQ-1 keyboard and I'd like to be able to transpose the midi notes an octave down so I can hit those lower notes. I realize I can just play it an octave higher and then transpose it using the midi editor but I'd really like to be able to hear what I'm playing. In Cubase there was a transpose button that would shift the incoming midi to whatever value you selected. Any such animal in tracktion?
Thanks,
Mike

Now that's cool. javascript:emoticon(':o') I just tried it out. Does it actually shift the midi notes or does it shift the audio out?

Assuming you're using a vsti, if you put it before the synth you will transpose the MIDI, but if you put it after you pitch-shift the audio.
You probably want the first option!

Thanks. Yes, that's the way I want it. The pitch-shift algorithm is that bad for audio? Oh well, it is nice and simple that you can use it for both depending where you place it.platinumears wrote:Assuming you're using a vsti, if you put it before the synth you will transpose the MIDI, but if you put it after you pitch-shift the audio.

I'm not really slagging Tracktion's pitch-shift: good quality pitch-shifting is a pretty hardcore (ie expensive) dsp process.. but even the top-notch devices that cost more than a new car wouldn't be as good for your purposes as simply transposing MIDIornitholestes wrote: The pitch-shift algorithm is that bad for audio?

No quibbles with anything anyone's said but thought I should point out that by putting the pitch shifter in front of your vsti you'll be recording the midi exactly as it comes out of your keyboard then transposing it.
The midi data in the piano roll will be un-transposed.

Thanks, Gary. I figured that would be the case. At least I can hear what I'm playing. Then I can remove the pitch-shift and transpose it in the midi editor after.GaryG wrote:The midi data in the piano roll will be un-transposed.

..or you can just leave it there if you want, like Cubase's non-destructive transpose in the inspector.

I have a plug in the MIDI plug-in pack that I just from
http://www.niallmoody.com/ndcplugs/ndcmidi.htm
There are alot of good tools here. I believe the one you want is the Midinotetrans, but you will get them all with the download. Plus, there's more good stuff on the site. Good luck!

No prob! I use these for different reasons. There are even some creative uses for these, especially inside racks.
And because they are free, they don't have to be included in T2. But yes, it would be nice to see some tools like this to further enhance the MIDI.
