In November, I went to a Sweetwater music demo night for ProTools.
I got there about 10 minutes early to get a decent seat.
The dude from Avid (digidesign) was sweating bullets since his G5 Mac took an all-out crap right there - lights out, nobody home.
He borrowed a mac from one of the Sweetwater guys and spent the next 25-30 minutes loading in at least a dozen CDs of programs for his demo.
I'll give him (or Apple) credit. 1/2 hour after, he was running his demo.
But don't believe that Macs don't crap - I saw it first hand.
The funny thing was, there was nobody, I mean nobody, offering up any advice to this guy - not even the sales guys from Sweetwater.
If this would have been a PC failure, well, 1/2 the room would have been crowding around the machine and putting in their 2 cents - just like that Apple commercial from 10 or so years ago says PC users do.
All that said - that new mini mac looks extremely cool. The industrial design at Apple is killer.

eye,
just wanted to tell you that i've been nothing but pleased with Tracktion on an old 400mhz G3 PowerBook. It runs quite a bit smoother than my other favorite host, Digital Performer. I recently purchased an old G3 Blue/White tower which I'm planning to stick a G4 upgrade card in. When all is said and done, I'll have about 500 bucks into the tower (tower was 90 bucks on eBay, ZIF upgrade, gig of RAM, and a 7200rpm internal drive. Since the Mac Mini announcement, I'm now wondering if that wouldn't have been a better way to go! Oh well..
Anyway, I'd also like to say there are some very cool, helpful folks on this board; they, and Jules and Mackie seem to be eager for Tracktion to flourish on both platforms.

I'm typing this from my brand new Powerbook, which I've had for approximately two days. It's fantastic. I've already loaded Tracktion on and it seems to run well. Once I pick up a Presonus Firebox I should be good to go.

Think of it this way: there must be a reason why the company that bought Tracktion isn't called Windowskie.

If you spend the same amount of money you put into a mac on premium parts for PC you can put together a killer PC with the same reliability.

You could put together a killer PC, but I'm not sure about the same reliability. You're still running Windows, which is really where the problems lay. The Mac software/hardware integration just is more solid, since they put everything together themselves. You don't have to worry about the mobo/component/OS wierdness that can often plague Windows PCs. I have a Mac laptop and Windows desktop, I did what you suggest and built up a 'killer PC' but truthfully, now I wish I would have bought a stock G5. It's not a big deal, but for me Macs just give me more confidence.AndrewSimon wrote:If you spend the same amount of money you put into a mac on premium parts for PC you can put together a killer PC with the same reliability.

bitch (for being able to afford the powerbook!)Sage wrote:I'm typing this from my brand new Powerbook, which I've had for approximately two days. It's fantastic. I've already loaded Tracktion on and it seems to run well. Once I pick up a Presonus Firebox I should be good to go.
Oh........be careful of the firebox it runs really really hot (ok, let the puns begin) I mean really though. And make sure you put it on something like a cloth or foam.......it'll scratch the sheit out of wood.

long time mac user here..I don´t really care if somethings faster or cheaper, macs are what I´m used to and what I rely on.
the only bad is, that you don´t have the big ocean of available(free) plugs like on the pc-side..but on the other hand I don´t miss anything using mainly Logic´s fx&instruments

I use Tracktion on both XP and OSX. The beauty of Tracktion is that the GUI is identical so there's no looking for different menu layouts, key commands etc. The only problem I have on the powerbook is that Expose doesn't work properly with Tracktion as the Tracktion window can't be resized. Shouldn't be a problem with T2.

I've been using a Mac since 95; I prefer the OS. Sometimes I get a bit narked at the relative lack of VSTs compared to PCs, but that doesn't really matter in terms of actually making music. And for that Tracktion is exactly what I need; stable and reliable.
Coffee please, black, no sugar.

I'm a diehard mac user from my highschool days. I can work much longer on a mac without fatigue then on my PC. The OS is just more enjoyable. If you are thinking about laptops, I don't think there is any option. In my opinion, Mac laptops are far better quality then their PC counterparts and the price difference is minimal. But I really am finding it hard to justify a 3000 dollar G5 tower that isn't as powerfull as a 1000 dollar build it yourself PC. I wish I could, but I just can't.
But whatever you choose, rest assured that we are committed to Tracktion running well on both platforms.
