Can not decide between
Presonus Firepod vs Echos new Audio Firewire8
Our band will be recording 8 analog drum tracks @ 1x from a Roland TD-10 electronic drums set. We will be using Tracktion 2 when it is available on a Custom PC built for audio.
Between the Firepod vs Audio Firewire8 would
one be better for this than the other. Your opinions
please thanks Mike.

What about the new RME firewire device. Looked good in SOS.

I agree the Fireface looks awesome.
Presonus price $599, Echo price $799
Rme price $1499 too much for my budget.

Does it has to be FireWire? I mean, you're going to record with a laptop and not a regular PC?

PCI interfaces tend to be a bit more stable, and the firewire ones can be very picky about the interface in your PC.

We will be using a Desktop PC. I like the
fact that the Firewire Devices come with
Software, presonus=Cubase LE echo=Tracktion.
I figure if the the D/I comes with software
it should work well with it and the Manufacturer
will stand behind it when there are problems.
Currently we have nothing so I figure either would
be a good starting point. We are graduating from
the world of Roland Hard disk recorders so this
is a big step for us. No one in the band is a techy
person we are all just musicians.

Hmmm....can you explain further? I was going to add firewire for my laptop (via plugin card), but if there's going to be trouble, I'd rather not. :?
I've heard of Music Concrete...is there Music Asphalt?

For my situation becuase I don't have a recording
application I am trying to keep it simple with
the interface coming with my audio application

Then definitely do not limit yourself to FireWire interfaces, but also look at PCI's.

For example the AudioTrack Maya1010 also has 8 analog inputs, two of them have mic preamps. Excellent quality, especially for the unbelievable price. Do you have a mixer with direct outs? Or must the mic preamps be on the interface?

That is like buying a specific car because it comes with a certain radio / MP3-player for free. You know any radio will work in any car. And any interface will work with any application, especially the ones you are looking for.

Also, often the extra shipped software is just appetizers. Demo versions or just not good enough to do the job properly. Its nice they ship it with something so you can start right away. Milage will vary on the first free tank of gas

Btw: Tracktion is actually quite easy and intuitive to use, as opposed to CuBase.

Most trouble I've read comes from firewire interfaces that were standard on the PC. If you are getting a PCMCIA firewire interface to connect a firewire audio thingy to the laptop, then chances of succes improve. At least you can try out different brands & types until you have a working combination.

Firewire is pretty darn stable, can't see a problem myself.

Then count yourself lucky, others were not...
Search the hardware forum on "FW problem", talk to you later, ok?

ECHO'S FIREWIRE INTERFACE
has 6 in on back side and 2 xlr on front.
The Roland electronic drums is 8 1/4 outs.
Will running 6 to the back of the unit
and 2 the front cause problems being
some mic level and some line levels?

If you haven't checked into them, maybe look at M-Audio's interfaces as well.

I started on them several years ago and they were always very solid. They're in your price range as well.

Good luck,

I use a Presonus Firepod with Tracktion and it is very stable on both my MAC OSX Laptop and Windows XP desktop...the advantage of the Firepod at 599.00 is that it has 8, count 'em 8, Mic Pres. Any of the other items you mentioned I believe (not 100% sure) only have two phantom powered mic pres.

Actually the only issue I had with the Firepod was the included Cubase LE...it didn't like BFD when scanning plugins so I just deleted cubase right after installing it..
