Hello!

I have some experience with Cubase from earlier, but that was many years ago, before they even dreamed up VST. Taking up my musical hobby again with a brand new and fast computer, it's amazing where the world of musical software has gone, everything now possible to do within the computer itelf, yes even within one application (ok more or less).

As soon as I came across Traction I was taken in by it's simplicity (in the positive sense) and in my spare time I'm trying to figure out it's features.

Is it for example possible to have different time signatures within an edit? Doesn't seem so.

Yes it is! And this is one of the reasons I love Tracktion.

Move your playlist cursor (purple line thingy) to where you want the new Time Signature. Now, right-click on the timeline at the top (the bar which should have your original time sig and tempo on it at the far left side) and select "Insert New Time Signature at Cursor".

I don't have Tracktion here at the moment, so I may have got some of those details wrong. But you can change the time sig and tempo arbitrarily throughout an edit.

You can even ramp smoothly from one tempo to the next: just hit the "ramp tempo" button under the tempo and time sig fields.

Yes, it's quite easy actually. Just position the cursor where you want the tempo/time sig change to happens, click on the tempo box at the top and look at the options at the bottom where you have the option of time sig, tempo and triplets.
You have to remember the greatest thing about Tracktion is the context sensitivity of the interface.

[edit]the other great thing about Tracktion is that, by the time it took me to type this, you had 2 answers already :hihi:

Wow, that is what I call excellent response time... :)

Thanks for your response and yes, that is what I tried but there is only an "insert tempo change at cursor position" menu choice. Changing the tempo in the box in the "context-sensitive" area seems only to affect the whole song. I'm having Traction in front of me now. Do I need to select something special?

Are there newer versions? I'm using 1.6.0.1, and it's even registered! :)

If you can give me... oooh [looks at watch]... 37 minutes, I'll have access to Tracktion. :D

But from memory, insert the Tempo change as you were doing before. You don't need to change the tempo, just keep it the same. That bar at the top should be split in 2 now. The previous one up to your tempo change, and the new one going all the way to the end of the song.

Click on the new one, it should highlight as a red box now. In the context area at the bottom, you should be able to change the time signature for the new section of your song.

You see, the time signature and tempo are handled by the same context menu. You don't need to change both. When you add a new tempo section, it keeps the tempo and time sig as it was before allowing you to change either or both.

What! Do I have to wait so long? :D

That's it! Excellent. Simple and straightforward, though not completely intuitive (or am I slow?). Actually I searched the help page. Maybe a line about time signature changes would be appropriate.

Thank you for your help! I'll probably be back... great forum!

Part of what makes Tracktion so great is that there is so much power there. What may not seem intuitive at first becomes very logical and easy.

And for T2, there will be a full documentation, so I'm sure that would be included. Good luck!

It took even longer than that. I ended up stopping for fish & chips on the way. :D

I have to admit though, I kinda gave up on the help section for T1. Luckily, everything I needed to find was pretty intuitively laid out, so a bit of playing around here and there delivered the goods.

Looking forward to some revamped docs in T2.
