Hey since Im a tracktioneer soon to be t2, on the brink of a tax return im very seriously thinking of picking up me mackie onyx 1220 and selling my dfx12. Eventually I want to get the firewire expansion. Beno or anyone what do you think about it? Is it real nice with tracktion 2? Well or 1... :)

How would the preamps differ from my dfx12? Why are there only 4?

Hey Ron

I got the Onyx/Firewire set up. When I got the firewire card, It came with T2

I like it alot!!! The preamps are marvelous! I cant tell you what the difference between the Onyx and the dfx, cuz I dont know.

I've had mine since November and have recorded live, recorded in my home studio, and used it for composing tunes. It plays well with T.

The big beef some peps have is that the signal is routed from the board pre eq, but thats fine by me.

Buy it from one of the 30 day return chains. If you like it, keep it.

Ron, The DFX are our do it all budget mixer. The ONYX are our top of the line quality mixer. The pres have more gain, more headroom, less distortion, smoother frequency response, and better quality and more expensive components (hence the major price difference). The routing is much more flexible on the ONYX series as well and don't forget the awesome sounding EQ section. As Todd said, if you can get a "demo" and compare in your studio/working environment, that is the best way to discover if the differences justify the price for you.

i've had my onyx 1640 + firewire since november as well. while i don't have any great recording examples readily available i can say that it has been an awesome replacement for my echo layla/mona pci interface and mixer configuration.

i never used the echo outputs for analog mixing (only recording, etc), so going to the onyx was ideal for me.

the only quirk i've noticed with the windows driver is that you have to be careful about powering up/down the onyx and 'unplugging' it from windows properly or else the WDM driver gets quite wonky, requiring a reboot... with mac os x there doesn't seem to be any problems though (wish the windows side was this great!).

i've used it with tracktion win/mac, garageband2 and logic 7 express flawlessly. i only wish pro-tools could utilize this great hardware (and im too cheap to buy any of their bundles)...

i dont know anything about the dfx mixers, but i had a 1402 vlz and a 1642 vlz for the echo interfaces and the convenience of the firewire option board with onyx is the best thing ever -- as well as being the reason i've dumped my mixer/interface config.

Awesome replies. It definately seems to put things into perspective a lot more. I'm kind of pissed off though because the dealer who sold the mixer on ebay apparently sold all three of them at the great price and I am simply left with hoping I can figure out a way to find it in a lower price than what everyone else is selling it for :( Plus it includes tracktion1 which I already own. Sigh.

*EDIT*!!!! Talked to the dealer he has more lined up!!!!
HURRAH! I can't wait to get my money and buy it!

I have the 1620. Wish I had the 1640!!! Especially for the live recording. Having only 8 xlr's is a little limmiting, but I've managed.

Who knows, maybe it will be for sale soon! (this is where the little icon shows lust for the 1640)
