trouble making local copy from CD on Mac

Anyone else get this - when I select "make local copy" when importing an audiofile from a CD it gets badly garbled. I have to add it from the CD then render/replace. And that is going very very slow (10 minutes for a 3 minute stereo file.

anyone else ?

aaarg - I have rendering a 6 minute stereo file. Its been 30 minutes and counting!
