Voxengo LF-Punch alpha - punch effect for contemporary music

I've come up with a brand new FX designed for contemporary music: pop, rap, club, trance and the likes. The music where low-frequency thump and punch is most welcome, and where distortion is applied specifically to bring the kicks to life.

So, here it is: LF-Punch FX.

The params are:
X-Over: span of the FX area: everything from 0 to X-Over gets this effect.
Strength: strength of the punch FX. This is partially interconnected with the Distort parameter.
Phase: a useful phase-shifting parameter. This control additionally helps at achieving spectacular punchness.
Distort: amount of distortion exaggerated kicks get. At extreme settings this creates creaky bass drums.

This is a pretty specific FX not suitable for everything, but I felt like there's a lack of such effects designed for serious contemporary music producers. So, here it is. It's an early alpha, so it may have some bugs.

BTW, http://www.the-air.com now features Preset Exchange area.

same thing as with especially the first versions of Warmifier - I don't hear any difference at all...

jens, are you sure? It can add A LOT OF distortion. So it's probably means your audio has not so many bass kicks.

Joseph, this is undecided, but it won't be anywhere high.

This is a great idea for a plugin, it seems to be unique in the plugin world. I think this will come in handy for my electronic productions!

would you recommend to use this as a master effect, or just on single tracks like kick drums and bass?

Brian, thanks for your feedback! I really hope it will be of use in some cases. The FX is pretty ..err.. unconventional and I doubt any commercial company beside Voxengo will ever release something like that.

I have a feeling that famous electronic music production is done using freeware FX and other 'strange' FX built-in into some hosts because most plug-in companies simply strive to produce irreproachable FX - compressors, EQs and others alike.

BTW, I'm planning to add built-in compressor and gain level for the low freq (effected) signal.

scam_artist, this FX should be suitable for both - electronic music post-production and mixing (e.g. for drums and bass).

I find this hard to believe, the effect is anything but subtle (sorry, not trying to be rude or insulting). Even without using the distort knob, turning the strength and phase knobs a bit results in a significant change on kick drums and bass. To me this is much more obvious than subtle Warmifier settings.

Aleksey, I am having fun with this.

Brian, built-in compressor makes things much more controllable - will release an updated version later today.

Sounds like a brilliant idea - I was wondering about this gap in the market myself some time ago. It' s great to see Voxengo come up with fresh new stuff aswell as great bread and butter plugs. Eagerly awaiting the release :)

a pretty standard kick effect chain looks like: source, gate, eq, compressor, limiter to give it a good punchy twist. i'm always working like this (at least, sometimes maybe more via sidechain ie. reverb, chorus, gate). this goes beyond every channel effect i tried especially since characteristics of compressor and limiter have to complement each other. i think the world needs more effects like the one you put together here and i'm looking forward to check it out tonight :)

my experience is that most kicks (samples that is..) already is overprocessed in many ways, so that effect chain of yours Ronny, looks a bit like overkill, for me anyway. but sure.. i can see the point of it. :)

litle bruzzled over what the gate effect is doin there tho?

if i dit it like that, my kicks would sound like a major KLICK, and the body would be completely gone. hehe.. so for me its enough with some decent EQ:ing along with some form of distortion/overdrive if needed.
