Why are the EQs available (eg in Ozone) displayed on a logarithmic scale or something? why not on a linear scale? I hope someone understands my question... :)

Post

Its because our ear's perception of pitch is logarithmic. Using a logarithmic scale for an Eq display therefore makes the image tie in much better with what we actually hear

Post

thanks for the reply... can you explain with an example?

OK lemme see if I got this straight: the EQ display is logarithmic because we can perceive the difference between a 200Hz and a 700Hz tone more easily than the difference between a 16000Hz and a 16500Hz tone?

Post

Yep exactly. The 200 and 700Hz tones sound like there is a big difference in pitch between them. However, you can only hear a small difference in pitch between the 16000 and 16500Hz tones.

It helps to remember that playing a note an octave higher means doubling its frequency. So if you have a tone at 100Hz, then a tone an octave higher is 200Hz. If however you had a tone at 5000Hz, then an octave higher is at 10000Hz. You can see you need a much bigger change in frequncy to get the same perceived change in pitch

wow, I didn't know that fact (+1 octave pitch = 2x frequency)!

Learning new things everyday. Thanks a lot! :)
