paste clipboard to current position

I'm pretty new to Tracktion - bought 1.6 to upgrade to 2, and didn't use it much until I got v2.

I am trying to use a function that seems quite simple from the reference manual - if you right click and choose to copy the track, or click control-c, you will copy the track and filters to clipboard. I do get an acknolwedgement that this has happened.

However, when I try to paste to the current position on another track, I get a message saying "nothing to paste". I found a discussion of this awhile back in this forum, but there didn't seem to be a clear conclusion about whether this function worked or didn't.

This particular track is a pain, since it only has automation data (ERA as a filter sends the notes to the synth). So, I can't select the clip, since there isn't any, apparently. If I choose to paste, instead of pasting track to current position, the filters are copied. And when I inspect the contents of the clipboard it says '1 track'.

So far, I'm not seeing how to do this easily, at least in a way that's consistent with Tracktion being easy to use (which has been my experience so far).

In any case - yeah - I know there are workarounds, but I'd like this to work. Am I doing something wrong, or does it blatantly not work?

I copy/paste tracks all the time, but you cant paste a track to a cursor location. A track is a track. It goes from beginning to end. Clips and automation reside IN a track.

You can select a track, copy it using one of the few methods ( I usually Ctrl>c ) and then just paste and it will copy it to just below the selected track.

If you select a different track before pasting, it will get pasted below that track.

To copy/paste automation you should select the AUTOMATION curve and copy/paste that.

To paste it you would select the track that you want to paste it to and set the cursor where you want it to go and then paste.

Well that makes sense. I went back and read the manual again, and it still seems misleading to me. But you clarified it, and you saved me a good deal of trial and error before I got it right. Thanks.

It still seems to me that the way that it should work is - you select copy track, and then you can paste the track (even if it's just automation) onto another track.

But, I can't say I've spent enough time with Tracktion to come close to figuring this kind of thing out. It does seem like it's way underpowered with these utility type functions compared to Logic, which I used on the Mac. But I do prefer this interface, and the more modular approach, especially of the rack filters.

The reason it doesn't work is that automation is not tied to any track: every parameter has an automation curve available, which can be viewed on any track. This means you can create a blank track just to use as a lane to display a certain curve, and you can also view multiple automation curves for the same filter at the same time.. but the automation doesn't really live on those tracks, you have just chosen those tracks as the most useful place to edit them.

Hope that make sense.. I'm still on my first coffee of the day! :)

that's interesting. I haven't gotten enough into Tracktion to understand how this works in that kind of depth yet - but, still - why couldn't this 'display only' association of automation curves and automation be considered part of the track for copy/paste?

Or - putting it another way - if I copy & paste to get another instance of the filter with the automation curve, and then to edit it a little - this new automation curve would only affect the parameters on the new instance, not the old one, right? So, why wouldn't i want it to work this way? Or am I just babbling (very possible)?

If you copy and paste a filter, you will also copy any automation.. but it might not be visible until you view it on a track!
