Side chaining

In Cubase? Side chaining doesn't work that I'm aware of. Logic supports it though. Basically what it is is one track feeds or side chains into an effect on another track. So you have a bass drum track and a vocal track. The compressor triggers when the bass drum hits, for example, and it compresses the vocals. If side chaining does work in Cubase, someone speak up though.

Somewhere, someone on KV wrote up something about how to do this. If they don't show up and post in this thread, PM me and I'll see if I can dig a link up.DevonB wrote:In Cubase? Very convoluted, but functional. Guess it's no worse than setting up the environment in Logic though.

So what your saying is that one effect can feed 2 tracks is`nt that the same as a send effect then where you can use an effect for different tracks...DevonB wrote:In Cubase? It may look hairy at first, but it's pretty straight forward once you get your head around it. Of course, you could also make a Cubase project template with the routings already in place and save some time that way.DevonB wrote:Very convoluted, but functional. No. Normally when you have a compressor on a track, it's that track that triggers the compressor. Side chaining allows ANOTHER track to trigger the compressor on the first track. Totally different than a send bus, which allows you to send multiple sources to a single, independant track.dudley wrote:So what your saying is that one effect can feed 2 tracks is`nt that the same as a send effect then where you can use an effect for different tracks...DevonB wrote:In Cubase? No, it doesn't sound difficult, but a work around is a work around. Sucks when you have to kludge things together to get a certain functionality out of something.rune_lh wrote:It may look hairy at first, but it's pretty straight forward once you get your head around it. I wouldn't necessarily call it a work around. I agree it's not directly intuitive, but then again this is Cubase we're talking aboutDevonB wrote: No, it doesn't sound difficult, but a work around is a work around. What do you mean by that is it that cubase is just not that great or did I miss something ...rune_lh wrote:I wouldn't necessarily call it a work around. Devon. This is just the way routings are handled.

Is it possible to side-chain in FLStudio? Maybe somehow with the mixer send tracks I presume?

Hi,Chase Altertone wrote:Is it possible to side-chain in FLStudio? Maybe somehow with the mixer send tracks I presume?
I'm no FL Studio expert, but I don't think its possible to do proper sidechaining with plugins in FLStudio. However, you can do some tricks with automation that might mimic the effect and give you decent results.
The trick as I remember it, is to insert the FL Studio effect "Peak Controller" on the track you want to act as trigger(sidechain) signal.
Then on the track you wish to process(compress), you right click on the parameter (for example volume) and choose "Link to controller". You will find the peak controller data available as an internal controller.
This can work...but it's basicly just like riding the volume-knob, and it's not going to give you the same response & character as running the audio through a proper compressor.
Anyway, hope it helps.
Cheers,
Rune
