I think Live got a little better with 4.1.4, T2 a bit worse than T1, and now they are about on par from my experience, 3.2 P4. T2 has the edge because of freeze, but Live5 has freeze and is more cpu efficient than Live4, probably making it more efficient than T2.
Of course this doesn't mean people who prefer working in T2 should care really, as long as they get acceptable performance. What I use T2 for I can't do in Live
And vice versa.

Tracktion is reasonably CPU efficient (at least on the PC, I can't speak for the Mac), but does need a healthy chunk of RAM to operate in.

I had the same reaction when I recorded some midi parts with some CPU hungry synths/patches that I use in Live4 all the time (Battery, Minimonsta, Xphrase) and quickly hit the CPU limit on my AMD 3500+ in T2. Live never hits the limit with just a few tracks, it was a signifigant difference!
The saving grace is that the freeze is soooo quick & easy to use and your back in action. It is a little suprising and disappointing. It would be forgiven if you could copy or adjust the levels on the frozen parts!
Is it possibly related to some setting in T2?

Anyway, you should give Live another look IMO. 10 minutes is a bit too short.
What I think is a beauty move for T users (if you need a control surface) is to buy a UC33e or another controller that comes with Live Lite for free and rewire it into T2 to use for timestretching. It works great in this capacity and is a great compliment to T2.

Screw Live. Screw T2. Screw Cubase, SONAR, and Logic!
eXT forever! Viva la Revolution!
ps. T2 is OK, but it needs some fit and polish work. The Live demo turned me off almost immediately, it doesn't fit my workflow. Cubarse is a dog, SONAR doesn't fit my way of working, and Logic isn't worth buying a Mac to run! There, rant over.
