metronome issues

just wondering how the hell you guys set up the metronome? it just gets so annoying to try to set it loud or quiet enough without a smooth fader for it, and how the hell do you get it to play nice sounds instead of hss tsjj tkk tkk tkk

I rarely use it. I like a faster one than just on the beat. Like 1/8th notes, or more likely a very basic midi drum clip that has the right feel that I copy/paste waaayyyy down the track.
