Mushin (meaning "to practice" in Japanese) is a modern, free, and open-source audio plugin designed to encourage sonic experimentation. It blends classic analog-style distortion and dual filter chains with advanced modern tools - including side-chain ducking, a peak-limiter, a multi-pattern trance gate, a noise/FM texture generator, and extensive modulation capabilities.
Built on a C++ audio engine powered by JUCE and integrated with a responsive HTML5/CSS3 user interface, Mushin provides the speed of native DSP with the fluid responsiveness of modern web design.
Key Features
- Character Distortion and Dual Filters: Toggle between four distinct distortion models (Clean, Vintage, Acid, and Digital) and shape your sound using two independent filter chains (supporting Low-Pass, High-Pass, Band-Pass, and Notch modes) with dedicated resonance controls.
- Side-Chain and Limiter: Achieve perfect mix clarity. Trigger the internal peak-limiter using real-time external side-chain detection (perfect for kick-drum ducking) complete with attack/release, drive, ceiling, and visual gain reduction metering.
- 16-Step Trance Gate: Instantly create rhythmic patterns using 16-step gating masks. Choose from built-in patterns (Straight, Offbeat, Classic, Galop, Euclidean, and more) and fine-tune your steps with depth, attack, hold, and decay controls.
- FM Texture and Noise Generator: Inject vintage flavor, analog warmth, or rhythmic textures. Includes white noise, pink noise, and classic waveforms with selectable routing (Pre-Distortion, Pre-Filter, or Post-Filter) and frequency modulation.
- Dual Modulation LFOs: Keep your tracks moving. Assign two independent LFOs (featuring Sine, Triangle, Saw, Square, and Random waveforms) to modulate up to 16 parameters simultaneously via a flexible modulation matrix.
- Preset Manager: Save, recall, and navigate your presets instantly with keyboard navigation (arrow keys + Enter) and real-time search filtering.
