The API 5500 is a dual-channel equalizer that brings the legendary tone of the API 550 series EQs to a convenient 1U rackmount format. Based on the acclaimed 550M module, the 5500 provides two channels of classic, musical equalization, making it an ideal choice for tracking, stereo sub-group processing, and mastering. It delivers the same punchy, warm, and powerful sound that has made API EQs a studio standard for decades, but with added features that enhance its flexibility in a modern workflow. The 5500 offers the sound of the classic 550B, providing four bands of equalization per channel. Each band features stepped controls for frequency selection and gain, allowing for up to 12dB of boost or cut. The two outer bands can be individually switched between peaking and shelving curves. A key innovation in the 5500 is the "Range" switch, which allows the user to scale the boost/cut steps from their standard values down to half (.5x) or quarter (.25x) values. This feature is incredibly useful for mastering and other subtle adjustments where fine control is paramount. The unit also includes a hardwire bypass for each channel and a "Tone" button that engages the bypass but leaves the signal running through the analog circuitry for added warmth. With its all-discrete design featuring the 2520 op-amp, the 5500 is a true heir to the API legacy.
