ANARCHIA is a two-layer cinematic instrument featuring up to 24 voices, capable of dense, intricate textures and sound design, based on rhythmically aleatoric long performances with multiple playheads and random sample start positions.

AN ALEATORIC APPROACH TO RHYTHM.

ANARCHIA is based on long performances with unpredictable timings across a few different categories/articulations.

The articulations are designed to capitalise on a range of different textural qualities - from very soft and minimal (intermitted simple repeated notes in one pitch) via more elaborate (octaves) to detailed, noisy (scratches, buzzing piano, woodwind/brass flutters).

Because the timing of the sampled performances is aleatoric (off grid), their textural aspects layer up in a very pleasing, organic way.

EMERGENT SONIC PROPERTIES.

ANARCHIA plays with the ability of the ear to distinguish separate elements of similar but divergent sonic information. With only a low number of voices per layer (3 for example) and little by way of effects the ear will keep track of the individual sub-layers/voices and place them in separate "containers" of perception.

With a larger number of voices -18-24, the "chunking" capabilities of our perception are overwhelmed, and we start to treat all the information coming in for each pitch as unified. The chaotic, aleatoric underpinnings of the individual voices persists, however, leading to a pleasing juxtaposition of clarity/unity and intricate detail.
