The Erica Synths Bullfrog is a semi-modular analog synthesizer designed as an educational tool to introduce people of all ages to the exciting world of synthesis. Developed in collaboration with electronic music pioneer Richie Hawtin, the Bullfrog is a complete, standalone instrument that provides a clear and logical layout, making it easy to understand the fundamental building blocks of sound design. While it is designed with beginners in mind, its robust analog sound and flexible patching options make it a powerful and inspiring instrument for seasoned musicians as well. The Bullfrog encourages experimentation and provides a hands-on, engaging way to learn the principles of subtractive synthesis.

The Bullfrog is a complete voice, featuring a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with selectable waveforms, a classic low-pass filter (VCF) based on the Polivoks design, and a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) with an integrated envelope generator. For modulation, it includes a versatile looping envelope that can function as both an LFO and an envelope generator, as well as a sample & hold circuit. A unique feature of the Bullfrog is its use of voice-cards, which allow users to load different patch configurations, providing a fun and interactive way to explore different sounds and synthesis techniques. The synthesizer also includes a built-in speaker and a divider circuit for creating sub-octaves. While it is semi-modular, with an internal signal path that allows it to make sound without any patch cables, its extensive patch bay encourages users to break the internal connections and create their own unique sounds. This combination of user-friendliness and flexibility makes the Bullfrog an exceptional instrument for both learning and creating music.
