Library #8 by Bob Dedes/Modern Cinema is one from a very different world than most libraries found ANYWHERE. Shogun is a library for Epic Japanese Cinematic lovers. Crafted for composers working in film, games, and narrative media, this is more than just an instrument — it's a fully realized toolkit that invites you to write music rooted in tradition, yet shaped by innovation.
Every sound within SHOGUN has been purpose-built — from hybrid recreations of traditional instruments like the shakuhachi, koto, and shamisen, to cinematic textures born from experimental bowing, synth fusion, and handcrafted percussion. This isn't deep sampling. It's storytelling through sound — sculpted for fast, inspired sketching and emotionally driven scoring.
SHOGUN brings together percussion ensembles, evolving drones, signature flute expressions and hybrid benders, organic motions, and playable instruments that all work in harmony — giving you a cohesive palette to shape your vision.
Every layer has been carefully designed to feel alive, cinematic, and unmistakably imbued with the Japanese aesthetic.
At the heart of SHOGUN lies the mystique of Japan's Edo period (1603–1868), an era marked by peace under the Tokugawa shogunate but shadowed by the weight of rigid hierarchy, secrecy, and discipline.
This was the golden age of the samurai—not in constant war, but in moral and cultural refinement. It was a time of artistic flourishing, spiritual discipline, and a growing sense of national identity.
The term Shogun itself translates to "Commander of the Armies," originally a title given to generals, but later representing de facto rulers of Japan. These were figures of immense influence, not only as military leaders but also as gatekeepers of culture.
Your journey through the SHOGUN library is a journey through centuries of discipline, honor, and creativity—from the thunderous taiko drums used to rally warriors in battle, to the melancholic resonance of the shakuhachi flute, once played by wandering monks who were former samurai.
The SHOGUN library includes a selection of powerful, evocative sounds—from deep percussive strikes to expressive winds—crafted to inspire epic storytelling:
