Tempest Instruments created this experimental instrument to enable exploration of the tonal possibilities that emerge when blending 16 unique orchestral instruments. Whether you're seeking a creative tool to craft rich, evocative textures or a reference for orchestration to hear how different instrument combinations interact, Sona / Chroma is designed to inspire.
Tempest Instruments collaborated with extraordinary musicians from the North Carolina Symphony, based in Raleigh, NC. These talented performers delivered long and short tones, meticulously recorded with the vision of creating phase-locked samples for seamless and satisfying blending. Tempest then dedicated months to processing thousands of these recordings, ensuring every long tone loops perfectly and transitions smoothly into any other.
Building on this foundation, Tempest sought to craft an immersive visual experience to complement the audio. The result is a groundbreaking interface that merges visual colors with sound timbres. As you move the cursor—whether through MIDI CCs or a mouse—across the visual grid, both the audio and visual colors shift in perfect harmony.
This innovative approach allows users to explore tone combinations between individual instruments and entire instrument groups. It's not just a fun and creative way to craft unique colors; it's also an invaluable tool for orchestral composers, offering an intuitive platform to reference and experiment with various instrument blends in one elegant interface.
