The Moog Subharmonicon is a semi-modular polyrhythmic analog synthesizer that invites you to explore a unique world of subharmonics, polyrhythms, and the unusual relationships they create. Inspired by the esoteric electronic instruments of the 1930s and 40s, the Subharmonicon is an instrument designed for creating complex, evolving sequences that are harmonically rich and rhythmically intricate. It is a portal to a different way of thinking about melody and rhythm, where patterns interweave and unfold in hypnotic and often beautifully unexpected ways. Like its siblings in the Moog semi-modular family, it is ready to make sound immediately but features a 32-point patch bay for deep exploration.
The sound of the Subharmonicon is generated by two analog VCOs, each with two tunable subharmonic oscillators. These subharmonics are mathematical divisions of the main VCO's frequency, creating musically related intervals that form the basis of the instrument's unique chordal character. This sound engine is driven by a complex polyrhythmic sequencing section, featuring two 4-step sequencers that can be clocked and divided independently to create shifting, interlocking patterns. By combining these subharmonic chords with layered, out-of-sync rhythms, the Subharmonicon produces a sound that is truly its own—a mesmerizing cascade of melody and rhythm that is both ancient and futuristic.
