At the heart of SWAM VariFlute is over a decade of cutting-edge research in physical modeling. Unlike sample-based instruments, VariFlute doesn't rely on recorded sound — it generates sound in real time by simulating the physics of airflow, material, and resonance inside a flute.
This allows for:

I play the flute and EWI, and own several of the flutes modeled by this virtual instrument (concert flute, soprano and alto recorder, pan flute, tin whistle, and shakuhachi). (I also own the SWAM English Horn for iOS.) Because I'm a flautist, I suppose I'm more of a purist than most producers - so keep that in mind when reading my comments. When played with a keyboard, the sounds could pass for the real instrument in a mix, but are less useful for a solo. With the EWI, it might pass for a short solo, but again, it would really sound best in a mix. The instrument editor is fairly flexible. I also play the quena, ney, lakota, and fife. Although I haven't tried it yet, I see no reason these couldn't also be modeled with this software. As with all virtual instruments, take time to learn the range, notes, and special features of each instrument for best results. The main advantage of this is that it covers many timbres of flute sounds in one virtual instrument. The intro price of $39 made buying this a no brainer for me.

I am very happy with VariFlute. It's an instrument that's all about expression and although it sounds extremely realistic I just forget about realism as it perfectly translates what I feel and what I want to express. I just bought it a couple of days ago and I spent hours having fun with the instrument. I am playing a regular MIDI keyboard with channel aftertouch. I use the modulation wheel for expression and aftertouch for vibrato. These two in combination with velocity give me plenty oportunity to play as expressive as I want. I have also used breath controllers for a very long time but I don't need one for VariFlute. But that's a personal thing and above all a matter of practise.
