Synful Orchestra is an orchestral plug-in instrument based on Synful's patented Reconstructive Phrase Modeling (RPM) technology.

The RPM Phrase Database contains musical phrases for each instrument. These are not recordings of isolated notes but complete musical passages that represent all kinds of articulation and phrasing.

When Synful Orchestra receives MIDI input it looks at the pitch, velocity, amount of separation or overlap between notes, note duration, volume, pitch wheel, and mod wheel to determine what kind of phrase is being played. Synful Orchestra searches the RPM Phrase Database for fragments that can be spliced together to form this phrase. These fragments represent transitions between notes, slurs with portamento, lightly tongued transitions, aggressive fast bowing, rapid runs, long sustain regions with graceful vibrato, and noise elements like flute chiffs and bow scratches. Synful Orchestra stretches and shifts these fragments in time and pitch so that they combine to form the final output.

A single note in Synful Orchestra may be built from three or more rapidly spliced phrase fragments. Splicing ordinary PCM sampled sounds in this way would create unacceptable warbles and clicks. Synful Orchestra uses a patented form of additive synthesis in which sounds are generated from combinations of pure sine waves and noise elements. This gives Synful Orchestra the ability to rapidly stretch, shift, and splice phrase fragments while preserving perfect phrase continuity.

Key Features:

  • RPM instruments include Piccolo*, Flute, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet*, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba*, Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass.
  • Exceptional realism and expression using Synful RPM Technology: RPM note transition modeling, intelligent phrase fragment search and splice, RPM additive synthesis, infinite note extend without loops.
  • Entire orchestra fits in 32M of memory.
  • 80-160 real-time voices on P4 1.5 GHz.
  • RPM controls include Harmonic Tilt, Harmonic Parity, Transient Noise Trim, Sustain Noise Trim, Gain, Tune, Pitch Wheel Range, Delay for Expression, Synful Pitch Wheel mode for realistic portamento and pitch slide effects.
  • Natural timbral vibrato controlled with Mod Wheel.
  • Simple standard MIDI usage.

Normally I wait 10 years before asking, but is this dead? I ask as it is still for sale, I think. It always looked promising, now overtaken by audiomodeling?

The last sign of life was the following email from 2015:

Dear Synful Friends, .

At last there is a new BETA version of Synful Orchestra 2.6, and a new BETA website https://www.synfulauth.com. If you are an existing customer you can update for free at the new website. This version supports full 64-bit native processing on Mac and Windows. It also has a new user interface and a new software activation system. It supports:

VST (32 and 64-bit Mac and Windows -- Cubase, DP, Sibelius, Sonar, FL, MAX/MSP, Live, etc).

AU (32 and 64-bit Mac only -- Logic, DP, Sibelius, etc.).

AAX (64-bit only Mac and Windows for Protools 11 and above).

RTAS (32-bit only for Mac and Windows for Protools 10 and below).

The new SynfulOrchestra 2.6 runs on:

Mac OS X 10.7.x or later.

Windows 7, WIndows 8, or later (32 or 64-bit).

You must go to the new website https://www.synfulauth.com to download the BETA 2.6 version of Synful Orchestra. After the beta period (about five weeks) this website will become the new synful.com.

I hope you can find the time and courage to try out this BETA version.

Things you need to know:

1) When you install the BETA version it will remove the previous version of Synful Orchestra (generally 2.5.5 for Mac or 2.5.2 for Windows). So, you might want to download the installer for these older versions from the old website www.synful.com in case you need to reinstall it.

2) The new website is a bit slow now. That will change over the next month. It is also still under construction with lots of tutorial content etc. that needs to be uploaded.

3) If you are an existing Synful customer, you will need to obtain a new activation code to activate 2.6.x on your machine. It's free. There are instructions for how to do this on the new website. There is a 15 day demo period.

4) I really want to get your reactions to the new version. In particular I want to see how the new software activation system works. So do try to activate the software.

5) The new website does accept credit card purchases.

Please email me at eric@synful.com with any problems, questions, suggestions, etc.

Eric Lindemann.

The demo download from synfulauth.com was reported by f-secure virus scanner to be a trojan, can anyone confirm this?

I just downloaded the SynfulOrchestraSetup264.zip file again. Norton360 does not report any problems.

regards, pat.

Hello Pat, can you use Synful? Is it working? What is your setup? I coudn't get it to work, a few years ago now, on a Mac 10.13.

Yes, it works fine with Win10 / Cubase 11.

i've installed it as AUon a M1 under Big Sur ans fortunately it works like a charm.

Great to know this. I'd be interested in trying the demo again, it's been years. This always seemed to be the route that https://audiomodeling.com ended up at.

Well, not exactly, ... the synful guy has developed a kind of concatenative synthesis in where the accuracy of phrases and melodic articulations has been focused rather than a physical modeling approach, as the audiomodeling team does...
