Ultra

Introducing Ultra - a new synthesiser from Ultra.Audio.

Ultra is a 5 Oscillator Synthesiser, available in VST, AU, and Standalone formats for Windows and MacOS.

Ultra is the brainchild of Nigel Stanford, a Film Composer and Musician hailing from Wellington, New Zealand.

Nigel's passion for turning sound into visual art is reflected in his videos Cymatics, and Automatica, which have amassed over 87 million views on YouTube.

This passion led him to develop a new synthesis technique called UltraWave, which is unique to Ultra.

After a 7 year development period, including intensive feedback from producers around the world, Ultra is being released in Jan 2026.

Ultra is supported by a small team, based in Wellington, New Zealand. All staff are both practising musicians and software developers.

UltraWave Synthesis

Launch video: {See video at top of page}

UltraWave is a new form of synthesis, based on an extension of wavetable synthesis.

In practice, you can think of UltraWave as the cross between a Sampler and a Wavetable.
UltraWave adds pitch, amp, and timing information to a wavetable which allows it realistic playback of complex sounds - such as vocals - in a wavetable engine.

It supports Multi Sampling - a map of wavetables for pitch and velocity.

Notes that are played in between sounds generate a blended hybrid wavetable on the fly.

This means that unlike a sampler, there is no switching between sounds when playing notes in a scale.

UltraWave also allows Stereo Wavetables.

To allow for easy creation of UltraWaves, Ultra contains a powerful import engine to convert Samples to UltraWaves.

ULTRA features list:

  • Free lifetime updates
  • Five Oscillators
Three of the oscillators have engines that can be switched to other types.
  • Four Switchable Oscillator Engine Types
Including UltraWave, Analog, Super Osc and Sampler.
  • Dual Filters
Switchable filter engines - including Resonator, Comb, Formant, Ladder, MS-20 Style, and per Voice EQ.
  • 3 FX busses
These can be loaded with 8 categories of high-quality effects.
  • Flexible routing system
Oscillators can be routed to filters, FX busses, or to a direct output.
  • Stereo modulation system
Modulations can be inverted or offset per channel.
  • Visual Mod Matrix
As well as the standard list of modulations, users can view modulations grouped by source or target. Source view shows the modulation unit (such as an LFO) and allows it to be edited directly inside the matrix.
  • Advanced Sound Library
Each Patch has a unique icon, and an audio demo preview which showcases how it can be used. Sound packs have a complete audio demo featuring the patches in context, in a track. As the demo plays, the patch being featured is highlighted.
  • Buy Individual Patches
Musicians can browse a continuously expanding library of high quality patches created by the Ultra community. They can buy new sounds with one click, and install them instantly.
  • Sell sounds
Sound designers can apply to become a publisher and upload sound packs directly within the synth. They can then earn money from sales of Packs and Patches.
