UJAM and the Bob Moog Foundation have partnered to release the Vox Humana plugin, a standalone virtual instrument that faithfully recreates the Polymoog's Vox Humana mode, regarded as one of the most recognizable synthesizer sounds, famously featured in Gary Numan's "Cars".
One hundred percent of proceeds will support the foundation's educational and preservation initiatives, with UJAM and its distribution partners waiving all fees to ensure every dollar directly benefits the foundation's mission.
The Vox Humana plugin is built on the sampled sounds of the Polymoog 280A, carefully captured by composer, producer, and synth enthusiast Alex Ball. With these recordings as the basis, the Bob Moog Foundation partnered with UJAM to transform them into a fully realized virtual instrument. Utilizing UJAM's proprietary Gorilla Engine — a platform widely used by top plugin manufacturers — the team designed an interface that is both intuitive and faithful to the instrument's original character.
At UJAM, we owe much of our inspiration to industry pioneers like Bob Moog. His contributions to music technology have shaped my career and so many others. Supporting the Bob Moog Foundation through the Vox Humana plugin is an honor, and by waiving all fees, we're ensuring that every dollar goes directly to advancing its mission and preserving Bob's legacy for future generations.

Bob Moog's pioneering work in synthesis has influenced modern music for decades, inspiring musicians and instrument makers worldwide. "Bob Moog is to synthesizers what the Beatles were to music, " said Marcus Ryle, lead developer of the Vox Humana plugin and a board member at the Bob Moog Foundation. "His innovations have underpinned much of the music we know and love."
Among Moog Music's many contributions to music technology, the Polymoog 280A, introduced in 1978, was one of the earliest fully polyphonic synthesizers, offering musicians a selection of preset sounds that helped define the sonic landscape of the late '70s and beyond. Its Vox Humana preset, with its rich, vocal-like texture, became a defining sound of the era, used in electronic and pop music. Decades later, it remains highly sought after, continuing to inspire musicians and producers.
All proceeds from the plugin will directly support the Bob Moog Foundation's mission to inspire through science education, preservation, and interactive learning. Its flagship program, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, introduces young students to the science of sound through hands-on lessons with electronic and acoustic instruments. The Bob Moog Foundation Archives preserve over 50 years of synthesizer history, housing a vast collection of vintage instruments, schematics, prototypes, and recordings. The Moogseum, an interactive museum in Asheville, NC, continues to expand its exhibits and outreach efforts, including ongoing restoration following damage from Hurricane Helene.
By purchasing this Vox Humana plugin, music creators can get their hands on a piece of iconic synthesizer history while also supporting the important work of the Bob Moog Foundation. It's a chance to connect with the Moog legacy and contribute to the foundation's efforts to inspire the next generation of musicians and innovators.

Vox Humana does a nice job of recreating the sound of Moog Music's Polymoog 280A's famous "Vox Humana" preset, widely recognized from tracks like Gary Numan's "Cars." The plugin uses samples created by Alex Ball from a vintage Polymoog 280A, ensuring an authentic character. This project helps the Bob Moog Foundation, as all proceeds from sales directly support its educational and preservation work.
There are four distinct timbral modes: Original, Bright, Hollow, and Octaves. These modes offer effective, variations of the classic tone without overcomplicating the interface. Users can adjust the Attack and Decay with dedicated sliders, allowing for control over the sound's transient and release characteristics. Built-in effects—Chorus, Phaser, and Delay—further enhance the sound, adding depth and movement. Each effect has customizable parameters, making it possible to dial in specific textures. The plugin includes 10 factory presets, providing starting points for various musical contexts.
Vox Humana is a focused instrument. It does not try to be a universal synthesizer. Instead, it delivers the specific vintage sound. It should be great for music producers who want to integrate classic synth textures into their projects quickly.
