Free Amp

It sounds okay, but never more than that - won't confuse it with an actual amp. You can achieve better clean, driven and lead sounds with other free amp VSTs: e.g. Amplitube Custom Shop, Cypress TT-15 and Crunck V2. The CPU load isn't great either, which means I wouldn't reach for it to do low-CPU live tracking before switching it out for something else (I prefer Cypress TT-15 or the Simulanalog Guitar Suite amps for that).

tesselode plugins always look fantastic. No ugly gradients or whatever, which is welcome for free plugins. There's a LOT of control in this VST, and I think producers who use a lot of pitch and volume modulation will find creative ways to use it. I tend to stick with simpler modulation VSTs though.

I'm a beginner at synth programming and this VST makes it quite easy to get loads of different sounds without presets. The modulation section is very intuitive, and you can go from thumping bass to shrill leads. Nice interface too.

My favourite VST for analog-style fuzz. Decent level of control, but you don't need to dig into the manual to figure it out. If you push it really hard you can also get Big Muff fuzz sounds, which is great for a free VSTs.

Great for really seasick phaser sounds. For more subtle stuff I prefer Phazor VST. Can't go wrong with either though. Always impressed by the quality of Full Bucket Music's free VSTs. Check out their other stuff too.

Nice-looking interface and easy to use, but I prefer their DC1A compressor. Similar idea (two knobs, a couple of modes), but feels more intuitive to me. I'd say stick with the one you prefer - you don't need both.

My previous go-to for chiptune drums was the Tweakbench Toad VST, but that was only in 32-bit and had a tiny interface. This one is a lot higher-quality and the interface is far better for large screens.

Don't have experience with the original drum machine this is based on (the BOSS DR-110), but this is a really versatile VST with decent CPU usage. I think the reverb is a modern addition, and saves using an insert on the track.

Very easy to use reverb. There's about two controls - almost impossible to mess up. Never really found myself wishing for EQ controls, but you can stick one after it if you need it. My only real issue is that I wished the different reverb modes were synced to the host BPM. Would make it perfect for every situation in that case.

Signal Noise SN03-G Tape Recorder

Almost as good as Airwindows' Iron Oxide tape emulation VSTs. Sounds really good if you push it - lots of low-end and distortion. My only real complaint is that the tape hiss function is a bit useless - it's a sample sound playing on a constant loop that you can turn on and off. Would be helpful if the tape hiss was more dynamic and responsive to input.
