TLs Saturated Driver

This was a weirdly good saturator for the time. Another hidden gem from TBT.

I'm surprised there aren't more envelope-based distortions, even today. An old trick, especially for warming up sub-basses, is to take a compressor with super short minimum envelope times and drive the signal into it like a distortion. It introduces harmonics because the envelope time is shorter than a single cycle of bass-frequency waveforms.

An added benefit to distorting bass this way is that lower frequencies are distorted more than higher frequencies, which narrows the range in the mix that your bass sits at. It's a great bass distortion to use when you are keeping your mix in mind, and want lower bass to come out better through smaller speakers.

This plug-in is one of the few tools ever made to be designed for this very purpose, and it is still useful today.

Not gonna lie, this isn't something to scream about to everyone or throw what you got away because of it, no, but for what it is, it's great, must have IMHO, because...it's free! and does job nicely, on anything you can think of. Bold statement right? Try it, than.

I went on their site to download something else, took this one out too and after some time I needed something to throw on something, pulled up this fellow and dialed in what I wanted in matter of seconds, my CPU didn't even noticed it and what I got from it was surprisingly good, clearly from that moment it had my attention, so I started throwing it and it kept delivering, I realized this thing is actually pretty awesome, one of those plugins that are just easy and fast to dial in, get something nice and rewarding in seconds, one of those tools you can learn fast and than pull it out on everything because you just love what it does.

I think I can't give it any higher rating because let's be real, but wanted to show my appreciation giving shout out to everyone, try it, really, it's one of those things to have around.

This forum is full of topics about saturation (tape, tube... how to use it... blah blah blah) and it seems that it is phenomenon of these days. I'm not professional music producer - just hobbyist - so I don't need spend hundreds dollars for VST every year.

TLs Saturated Driver is nice plugin for adding saturation (for vocals and synths) or distortion (for guitar)... I never used it on master channel. GUI is clean and simple, knobs are self explanation. There are also some presets to start with (not much, just 9 + 1 default), but I thing that's enough. In zip file you can find "readme.txt", but I think, that you will never need it. CPU usage is ultra low (2% in my old notebook - 1.6GHz). I use it mainly on lead vocals to add some presence and saturation, distortion (call you as you want).

You can also find some other "saturation-based" plugins on TbT website site (e.g. GreaseTube, TubeLimit...) but I consider this one the best of them.

This an excellent "utility" effect: one of those things that you don't always need, but when you need *that* specific effect...it does the job perfectly. :)

I've used it in SONAR with a VST wrapper and it automated pefectly.

I've used it on some radio-style voice-over things where this exact kind of sound was requested, and it delivered perfectly. :)
