remember, you can still use racks for pcd support

it's a pain, I know, but if you are reliant on a delay causing send, then it's an option.

Wow, I love the new Aux/Send functionality. Seems to hit the CPU a bit, but I'm guessing that's cause I'm using Ambience in a Send track. :D

One question...

If I was to wrap an effect (Ambience, say) in a Rack, and add an instance of this rack to the end of my instrument tracks, set the DRY to 100% and set the WET abitrarily... would this be the same in theory as a Send/Return track?

Post

yup.

the sends are just racks with better front ends.

so, for the more dense in the crowd: If I put SIR in a send-aux, it will not work properly because the delay is not compensasted for, correct? Seems like a major ommision to me.

correct.

full PDC a fix!!??!! If my understanding (very little) goes, implementing PDC across busses requires a hell loota coding... Steinberg only implimented it with v2.0 and PT very recently. And that too only on their HD platforms. Logic i dont thik has it, maybe with v7, but deffinately not complete.

if Tracktion gets full PDC......

correct.
So, what is the easiest work-around?

Use it as an insert effect? ;)

Hmn, SIR has Dry/Wet controls, so an Insert should work fine, but won't they have to put SIR on every single track that needs it, effectively losing out on the CPU-saving send abilities?

Yes. Freeze and render is your friend here!

Sensible sub-grouping can help too (eg: backing vocals could be grouped with a reverb applied to the group)

The advantage is that you can tailor your reverb to each track on which it is used.. I prefer this anyway: even if you end up loading in the same impulse, different amounts of pre-delay can be very useful to create the illusion of depth.

I only recently figured out how to use racks as sends effectively. Similar to what's described on page 98 of the T2 reference guide, with one exception: the desired effect filters are placed *inside* the shared aux send rack.
  1. Wrap a plug in a rack
  2. Instantiate this rack on both the 'send' track(s) and the 'return' track
  3. On each 'send' track, set the 'dry/wet' parameter of the rack (top row of the rack property panel, next to the 'enabled' button) to 100% dry, 0% wet.
  4. On the return track, set the 'dry/wet' parameter to 0% dry, 100% wet.
  5. Adjust the send amount for each track by using the 'input level' control on the track's rack property panel.
With this method, you can use delay-prone plugs like SIR in the aux send rack and Tracktion will compensate with PDC. However, only *one* delay-prone plug may be present inside the rack, add any more and PDC won't adjust for it. Extra bonus: you can use these aux send racks on spanned VSTi rack tracks...sweet!

the easiest work around is to use racks ala T1, which works just fine.

Ceenda, I love the send/returns too, more efficient than racks just for sends, thats for sure. Let's hope PDC comes for send/returns sometime...

Lunch Money, When I wrote the original message, I already knew you would pop in with a comment like 'use it as an insert effect'... I already do this alot in situations where it is ideally unneccesary, but it is not really an answer to a legitimate problem. Next comes the hardware paradigm sentence as a response?? 8)

Anyway, a little bump on the road really.
