There's not a copy protection around that can't be cracked (though dongles seem to have deterred some people, no?) so I don't see the point of excessive copy protection.

Someone once explained to me that the main thing is to make it just tricky enough that a typical user can't just offhandedly run off copies for his mates. Beyond that, you're fighting a losing battle with the pirates, so you're better off trusting your product.

I agree with that.

Logic and DP are hard-copy only. There must be a reason...

Well, some want to buy over the net, but those same people would also probably buy it in a store, whereas the opposite isn't true (people who would buy it in a store, often wouldn't want to buy it on the net). And pretty soon, I'm betting, many if not most of Tracktion's users will have bought their initial copy of T in a store. Just my guess.....

There is. It's called: stores don't much like it when companies sell their wares direct.

It's generally not desirable to end up being a competitor to the stored you rely on to push your product.

You're right it isn't, but the world is changing, and stores are getting this in their noggins! They do themselves zero favors fighting against online sales. So while stores might like their products not to be sold online, the best strategy hasn't been to frustrate customers by not distributing on the net, but rather, to become e-stores too.

yeah, but Guitar Center selling Cubase over the net is very different to Steinberg/Yamaha doing it.

Usually, those companies that *do* allow direct purchase of their software tend to charge strict MRP, whereas the retailers can, and will, undercut that price.

true for now, but I don't think it'll be true for much longer...but I've been wrong many times (and right a few others) ;)

Well, I have seen many companies point their website visitors to trusted websites that do sell their software or goods. So, with the exception of maybe upgrades, maybe this is what Mackie will do?
