there's also no getting around the fact that windows is a frickin excellent platform whether you like it or not. you can bash ms all you like but at the end of the day it works and is pretty solid. you don't get a powerful and compatible os like windowsXP without a shitload of hard work.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

To MS defence, they put a vast amount of time and effort into compability (although it might not work all the time) but we can still use old/ancient hardware with newer systems.
Also they test the most popular software so they work on the new platforms.
I read somewhere that the programmer of the original sim city took usage of a bug in one version of the OS, and when the next came, they had fixed the bug but not in the way that you might expect, but in such a way that the sim cty game still worked.
That in my eyes are commitment, but I think we will se a shift here, MS being more prone to cut stuff out, and Apple to keep stuff longer.
MS reasons are for being bashed about security and patches all the time.
And Apple because of the larger costumer base, and also for the USB standard drivers.

I just started playing with Ubuntu over the last week and I'm really enjoying it. I have both the latest GNOME and KDE installed and I love the fact that I can switch back and forth. If you have been thinking of trying Linux out to see what it's all about I'd suggect this distro. They have intergrated an update application in there so it is very easy to add new FREE applications and system updates, plus they have a 6 month turn around on updates to the distro. I am considering it as my new general OS while keeping XP for Music only, mainly because I'll never get Linux drivers for my Mixtreme soundcard.

No. I make that statement from personal experience. You can't quantify an abstract concept like "security."rich_h wrote:Care to back that up with any facts and figures?LBN wrote:Yes.platinumears wrote:I though Linux was more secure than Windows.. am I wrong?LBN wrote:Did you just use "Linux" and "security" in the same sentence?platinumears wrote:I want a linux DAW so I can use JACK, and so I can relax a bit about security..
I admin a server farm of several hundred servers connected to the Internet. I wouldn't allow Linux nor Windows to be installed on any of them if it is my professional responsibility.
I'm not bashing Linux as an operating system. It's good for certain things but it's security model is in no way superior to Windows. Most Linux distributions install tons of useless services running in the background that most users aren't aware of, especially those new to Unix-like operating systems. Every one of those services is a potential security risk. Most users don't know how to go about securing a Unix-like operating system. It is much more complex than locking down a Windows machine for your average, non-computer-science-degree-wielding user. I don't think anyone with even a tenuous grasp on reality would argue this last statement.
