I was thinking you wouldn't need the + sign for opening up the folder track as it would look just like a normal track, but with say a little F on it denoting that this was a folder track. Clicking on the F would open a list of tracks in the folder and you would then click on the one (and one only) which was displayed - just like the + sign you have on looped audio recordings for picking which take you want the clip to display. The track that was displayed would be editable like any other (non-folder) track in every way. I do like the idea of an arrow though for cycling through tracks too.

I would want to be able to unfold the folder track, like a regular directory on the computer. It is clumsy to have to look through a list and pick which one you want to display like with the new takes option.

I want to have an arrow which when clicked unfolds and displays all the tracks, and when clicked again folds it up.

I would like to be able to drag and drop tracks onto other tracks. It would be nice to create a group of automation tracks which would be folded under the track with the audio and effects being automated.

I note that the last dicussion on the shape and form of folder tracks hasn't made it into the main feature list above, so I'm going to recap here:

In a recent folder track thread, I posted a suggestion which I think has probably been kicked around a few times in the past, and seemed to get a good reception in the recent thread...

When a group of tracks are selected, a couple of right-click options to collapse the tracks into a folder will be available:

1) collapse tracks into folder track - all tracks are collapsed, and either the track that received the right-click operation is automatically set as the 'visible' track (explained below).

2) collapse tracks and create new sub-mix track - a new track is created, the selected tracks are modified to route their output to the new track. They are collapsed, and the new tracks is set to be the visible track.

When collapsed, the tracks will show as one plain track in the tracktion editor. The visible track will simply be one of the folder tracks. Right clicking on a folder track displays a sub menu option containing all the foldered tracks. Selecting a track from the menu causes it to be the visible track.

A second right-click option will simply re-expand the tracks to their normal state.

Thanks to Tracktion's ability to place automation curves on any track, folder tracks would be able to display the automation curves for any tracks in the folder without any clever extensions to the UI.

Sounds good. Can you render a folder track? Freeze it?
perception: the stuff reality is made of.
