Considering you can get a Logitech optical mouse for $15 that works great, everyone with a laptop should get one. It takes up next to no room, and gives better control than any touchpad. I don't take my laptop anywhere without mine!

I love the touchpad on my Powerbook. But I mapped the arrows to scroll and am totally happy to use modifier keys (which is more convenient IMO when using a track pad).

That design looks like a sure route to RSI... Too tiny movements, especially when you have to use the mouse all the time...
This one is what I use, but no scrollwheel
