Tracktion needs confidence recording

The big meters are there true, but you can't be expected to watch them all the time. Having a visual record of the input is excellent feedback.chico.co.uk wrote:Yes. That would be why the big input meters were added. Incidentally, if you're reacting to something that's already happened, well, you've missed it.
Seeing a wav file that's clipped may be too late but if this is a live show then at least you can save the remaining songs and maybe even rescue what was clipped.
I use limiters and compression for live work on the pre-amps to help stop such occurances, so actually SEEING the wav's over time is not necessarily that critiacal, but having that feedback certainly can 'tame' those lively parts of a song and so help either the signal to noise ratio or having a less 'compressed' sound.
I agree it should be able to be turned off if is saves CPU.

I never record live gigs, so maybe this isn't an issue for me for that reason. But unless i'm mistaken a track that clips will light the big input meters red "clip" indicator up, so you can already tell that it's happened.
But if other people want this as a feature, that's fair play. As long as it can be turned off, sure, why not.

Sonar has this feature. And when I demoed Tracktion, believe it or not, it was probably the main reason I didn't switch. I liked to workflow of Tracktion a lot, but when you're used to having instant feedback that you're being recorded properly (and can stop if you're not, or continue with "confidence" if you are), it's tough not to have that.
Before Sonar added the feature, I certainly didn't need it. But, I've also had the experience where you go through a take and there's nothing there (it would sometimes happen on the first take after booting up -- and annoy the hell out of me). That just doesn't happen anymore.

zootlaw, you are an odd duck! I can't imagine that being the only reason to not switch!
Braj-- OK, that's the one reason I could understand needing or wanting it. Fair play.
Tingle-- for in-the-past metering? Nope. Especially not in the case of MIDI data. Braj has clarified for me what ttoz probably meant anyhow and I just missed it. I can give Braj (and therefore ttoz) that point.
I guess it never occurred to me because when I'm pluggin in microphones or my guitar, I'm testing the levels and I can always tell if I've got it "wired up" right so I always have confidence. Still, I can see why it would give you extra confidence that something's being recorded.

Braj hasn't made any postsLunch Money wrote:Braj-- OK, that's the one reason I could understand needing or wanting it. Fair play.
Obviously midi has no chance of clippingLunch Money wrote:Tingle-- for in-the-past metering? Nope. Especially not in the case of MIDI data. Braj has clarified for me what ttoz probably meant anyhow and I just missed it. I can give Braj (and therefore ttoz) that point.
N.B. Lunch - please re-read my previous post as for good reasons to see the wav files as they are recorded. If you don't do much live audio recording it's no surprise that you are not interested

Bah, oops, it was haydxn. I shoulda known Braj wouldn't say anything reasonable.
Still, it would have no or very very little use for metering, that's what meters are for. Or in other words, in the absence of meters, I understand how you COULD in theory use it as a substitute meter, but why would you when we already have meters?

Hear. This sucks big time (it sucked with Cubase as well), but if there's anything that can be done about this major bug, it would be great.PT wrote:I've done midi recordings that were a few minutes long only to find that nothing got recorded. It would be nice to see some indication that things were in fact being recorded.
It's a misery to do an inspired recording and find out that it was never recorded. And you have lost the inspiration.
