well that's the fix then i suppose

import the aiff into tracktion 2 or 1, then export as wav

I believe the issue was with 24 bit AIFFs in T2. Try 16 bit (if you can live with that, I definitely can myself).

at least beno works towards the questions..many here are lost in the forest raging about the caps on the trees?

Post

Ok Ok I get the point. The only reason I used caps was I was so friggin tired at the time that I could not be bothered. I did not realise that I would upset so many sensitive people and cause a very entertaining spate of non technical posts. To GET oops I mean get back to my problem. The files were rendered in Tracktion 2 on a Mac. The original files were recorded on an Alesis 24HD harddrive recorder and imported into Tracktion for editing and mastering. Thanks for all the replies. I suspect what Valley said about ITunes being the only app that recognised Traction Aiff files is correct. That being the case( lower case that is) can any of you Mackie technical people on the forum fix the bug.

Cheers everyone

Really weird, but I remember having had problems with filetypes that were supposed to work in Logic but didn't (admittely that was during some x-platform collaboaration way back and both machines were running Logic, so it might not be the same). Had to convert them manually, 1 at a time as no batch processor back then has been able to change the file header (which apparently has been the culprit).
Maybe using wave files would indeed be the best intermediate solution.

Thanks Sasha I believe you are right about the file header. I just don't understand why one Aiff file should differ from another. I thought it was a standard format.

Whats the advantage of using Aiff over Wavs?

I think there's not much advantages (unlike with SDII files which can contain things such as timestamping information, but I think the broadcast wave format can do this as well), it's just been the "native" Mac format or so, just as .wav has been the "native" Windows format. Meanwhile both platforms (or at least sequencers on both platforms) should deal fine with either format, but apparently that's still not allways the case.

OK, to bring this back on topic. I just rechecked this is definitely a known issue. Sorry I just forgot about the details of the known problem and didn't realize that you were reporting the same thing. So yeah, there is something screwey with 24 bit AIFFs created by tacktion either by recording or rendereing. They play fine in tracktion but not in other apps. We are working on it but to be quite honest, it is aparantly harder to fix then you would think. For the time being, I would honestly just use .wav for everything in tracktion and all should be good.
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Beno,
Many thanks for prompt reply. It's good to know you are aware of the problem and looking for a solution. I will work around it in the meantime.
