You nailed it exactly. I work on tuning exhaust sound, door closing sound for a high-quality 'chunk', power window motor sounds, you name it - if it makes a sound, I'm responsible to record it, analyze it, filter it, and recommend design changes to the actual parts to make the sound have a higher perceived quality.

Subaru are interesting - on most, if not all of their vehicles, they do not use an upper door frame. This takes mass out of the door, but some of that mass is nice to have for a solid 'chunk' sound.

not allowed to - signed a non-disclosure agreement when I started working here.

I did put up an archive of a sampled 'chain' which pHz seemed to like, using Tracktion's built-in sampler. He might put it up on the RMS thread if you ask him.

Why would you lower your master volume and then normalize? If you need to normalize your 2 channel mix, there is a problem with you mix...THAT'S what mastering is for.

I tell people it helps to use a light comp on the 2, and get flamed, but a guy says he normalizes his 2 bus mix and that sits right?

I don't recall if the B9 has a full frame, but certainly none of the Legacy/Impreza/Forrester lines have complete frames. I found that kind of disconcerting at first with my Impreza.

This takes mass out of the door, but some of that mass is nice to have for a solid 'chunk' sound.

Subaru's 'fit and finish' problems run a little deeper than just the door. The spring on the sun visors is strong enough that it literally snaps the visor into the 'up' position, and cheap ceiling upholstery allows it to echo with a very loud and cheap sounding 'ring'.

The door handle mechanism is rather unfluid, and has an annoying clack sound.

(you can probably tell, I greatly appreciate the work that audio tuning people, and ergonomics people do with cars, and indeed all consumer goods).

Still, Subaru's have about the best 4WD powertrain system for under 30K, and my Impreza handles like a dream, so I love it anyway.

You wouldn't. You might, however, lower the level feeding into the master section if you were intending to limit, and that is what at least some people were trying to say.

If you need to normalize your 2 channel mix, there is a problem with you mix...THAT'S what mastering is for.

Not really true. A computer is far better at accurately normalising a mix than a human with a throw fader (which is basically what normalising is after all). You'll spend hours getting it with .2db of red-line. The computer will spend 3 minutes and get dead on 0db. Take your pick.
