Mouse scroll as a simple midi controller...

Does anybody know if such a device/plug exists. I am looking for a way of adjusting vst parameters 1 at a time without having to adjust the slider with the mouse and without having an external midi controller.

The main purpose would be to add a way effect to guitar. It would be just a quick up down flick of the scroll wheel. While doable with the mouse pointer and slider but requires a bit more precision and to keep the mouse button pressed down.

I thought a bout doing this with a joystick as well but I don'w want to use a USB mouse (probable impact on my Tascam), I do have an older joystick that connected to a gamecard but I don't have a gamecard and you can't buy them anymore. There is software that will convert these joystick signals to midi controller signals, so that might be an intersting way to go, if I could only source a gamecard.

does the plugin you wish to control allow you to map CC numbers to the parameters? i could make you a plugin that will let you control a parameter with just the mousewheel but the only way it can send the data messages to the plugin is with CC data.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

I was looking at using Fretted Synth Waht which I believe does use CC mapping.

That would be cool and much appreciated.

Bidule can do this with its HID Data Extractor (found under Misc. in the right click menu).

If you need it, there's a VST Bridge for Bidule too.

I've looked at Bidule in the past and I wouldn't know where to start with it. I'll take another look at it though...
Thanks

Just made this for you:

MouseWheelCC

MouseWheelCC (pc only)

There are two controls, the top left adjusts the CC number, and the top right adjusts the wheel sensitivity. There's no interpolation/inertia or anything fancy, so it's likely to make awful stepping artefacts :s but you can at least record the automation and then apply that line directly to the parameter later for a smoother effect if needs be.

It requires focus to use, which means you need to click it before it will detect the mousewheel movements. I've not found a way around that, unfortunately. This probably means that you won't be able to 'midi learn' with this, because such tricks normally cancel when the synth loses focus :s but if you can set the CC manually, or you already know it, it will be fine.

The whole panel is resizeable so you can make it as big as your screen and leave it there if you want.

Hope this is handy :)

Cool! :D

I wouldn't expect there to be (if I understand this plug correctly) stuff like that would need to be implemented in the plug being controlled...

Man is that is sweet haydxn

you are indeed correct IIRs. however, due to the small size of the wheel, it's a bit fiddly to get big movements without a big sensitivity, which will move the control in big steps (like, 20 with each click of the wheel) - it could still be possible to at least fill in some gaps between those low and high values in the CC resolution.

of course, i can't be arsed. ;)

cool... I'll give it a try tonight...

Thanks a bunch!

haydxn, would the mouse driver settings for sensitivity have any effect on this plug?

Okay... So I didn't wait...
It works great... WahT has a midi learn but to get around that I clicked on MouseWheelCC than locked it. Went back to WahT hit the learn button, then the wah dial clicked on the locked MouseWheelCC and hit the scroll. Worked 1st time.
Thanks again Haydxn... I really appreciate this and I can't believe how quickly you put this together.

I think this more of an issue with WahT then with MouseWheelCC but I can use this to adjust wah (or other paramters). I can record the movements within MouseWheelCC but when play back the MouseWheelCCand Waht are no longer linked. Any ideas?

ahh! silly me i think i see what's going on there   silly bug means that the midi messages aren't sent when automation happens! i'm really sorry, just patch it up for you now!!
