[quote="moonlite"]rock, yeah, or even better, when you doubleclick the /project/, it opens the project, but doubleclick on the /edit/, it opens the edit!
quote]
In Tracktion you don't open the projects really you just single click on them to reveal the related files... that's why a double click on the projects (which currently does nothing more than a single click) would be a great way to quickly get running with the last used edit in the project.

on a separate note...
I agree, tracktion probably needs a way to let the user create a default new edit template

ok my 2p
if you have a pc crash & auto save on, the currant way T works you only loose whats after your auto save
the skatch book idear means you lose the hole thing
(thats happend to me someny times before in different apps)
the double click on a edit or project from windows explorer & get straight in to the project/edit that you just clicked is a verry good idear (i would love this to be added)

Ron,
One perspective as a counter-argument: Other programs that open with a "clean slate" (like word processors) expect that most of the time you will be working on a new document.
The other perspective: Just because other programs do it that way doesn't mean that's the way it SHOULD be done. Perhaps some of them can take a cue.
If Tracktion just did things the way other programs do, it wouldn't have a raison d'etre.
Greg

Ah, I don't know - Nuendo used the same thing (selecting the folder first) and I often wished I could get started, decide if the song's a goer, and THEN save it to a folder. Makes sense to me, too, and I think that's 3 out of 7 people who'd like it...

Hahaha - that's incredible confidence, dude!
Nothing like alienating newbies, eh? Make you feel warm all over?
I'm sorry, but if 3 people have posted saying it'd be handy, that's a pretty good indication that it's a valid feature request - how many do we need exactly to be taken seriously by Your Tracktional Majesty?

Well, the smilies were because posts can often seem more agressive than intended, but, frankly, you DID come across as assuming you speak for most Tracktion users out there - sorry if I misinterpreted.
I reckon Tracktion opens more clumsily than the other hosts I've used, which are Nuendo, Cubase and Logic.
Cheers,
b.

And *I* reckon that it opens more elegantly by taking you right to the selection process rather than a blank edit that you'll usually end up closing in favour of opening a different existing project or new project.
One point that nobody's bothered to acknowledge yet is that when you DO get around to saving your 'scratchpad' song, you will STILL need to designate a directory and project name. There is absolutely no work saved UNLESS you scrap the thing entirely. Which WILL happen from time to time, but I believe very strongly that most musicians like to hold on to ANY of their creations for at least a little while until they look back at it later and say, "Nah, never going to do anything with this" and then delete it (or even archive it, because some people are just THAT picky!).
That's besides the point, though. Someone made a request, and I presented reasons WHY it might already be the way it is (By virtue of the fact that it's the way it is, a conscious decision MUST have been made, regardless of whether it was a laboured or quick decision) in addition to presenting reasons why the current way is better than the proposed way.
I'm allowed to have opinions, too, even if they're contrary to other people's opinions. I don't see how that makes me a criminal or having "alienated" anyone. I also happen to think it's pointless to take every single suggestion that's made and say "Good one! Let's have it as an option!" and I've already explained why I'm of THAT opinion, also.
Nobody here needs their hand held, their fur stroked, or the back of their tail scratched. We're all grown people who are allowed and even encouraged to have different opinions that can and will contradict each others' from time to time.

I agree with nearly everything you said, except maybe that you presented "opinions", not "reasons", why the current way is better. It would be nice to have the option for those who would like it, and I'm only asking for the option, not for this to replace the other. I desperately want to use a smiley at the end of this paragraph, but I'll resist...Lunch Money wrote:presenting reasons why the current way is better than the proposed way.

I'm glad to have you here, as an experienced user, and of course you're entitled to your opinion - it just didn't come across as an opinion, and I've already apologised for misinterpreting. Another smilie-less paragraph... hard to give up cold turkey...
Anyway, hopefully I've made myself clear, and you're not cranky with me any more.
Cheers,

some people will, some people won't. still, you have to open the song.Lunch Money wrote:And *I* reckon that it opens more elegantly by taking you right to the selection process rather than a blank edit that you'll usually end up closing in favour of opening a different existing project or new project.
now wouldn't it be great if you could just launch the edit from explorer, be it empty or be it the track you're mixing right now?
you could have all your recent tracks AND and empty "scratchbook" file even in windows quicklaunch =)
actually, in most sequencers, the default, empty song /is/ a songfile just as much as any. thus, any autosave and whatnot DOES work just as well as with any other file you'd open. i think this is the detail you've overlooked the most. One point that nobody's bothered to acknowledge yet is that when you DO get around to saving your 'scratchpad' song, you will STILL need to designate a directory and project name. There is absolutely no work saved UNLESS you scrap the thing entirely. actually, it would be fine even if everything worked the way it works now, since you seem to be so fond of it. the only thing that actually would be needed to change is that t would jump straight to an edit when an edit is launched. imho this would be logical and intuitive.
this way we could have even /several/ different sketchbooks, with an varying amount of things readily loaded for us. and we could just as well load the most recent edit that we are working on. you see, this would better even the loading of any projects by eliminating one extra and unnecessary step. i mean, t takes so long to start, and then we have to still load something else to be able to begin. this disturbs the workflow.
i just want to start the project and if there's waiting involved, i'd prefer to be able to begin straigth after it. to be able to think of the melody or whatever instead of file- and projectnames until it's completely ready to be worked on.
catch my drift?
i bet that it has NOT been a concious decision to deprive us from the ability to launch an edit.
That's besides the point, though. i don't think that it has been a real coise between the "scetchbook mode" and the way it works now, either. i think that the "decision" has been based on what has been easier and faster to code. if not, we would have an option in the prefs to switch it on.
