I was having the two-hour scan problem, and I greatly reduced it by:
1) reducing the number of VSTs (prune what you don't need)
and
2) reducing the number of subfolders in my VST folder
The second bit helped just as much, if not more, than the first, which leads me to suspect that the problem has nothing to do with buggy or misnamed VSTs but is rather in Tracktion's scanning algorithm itself. Bad handling of recursion? I dunno.

Awesome suggestion, particularly regarding the recursion. Rock, how many layers deep is your VST folder, and how many sub-folders are within THAT folder? I know that mine only goes 3 deep from a Root directory:
D:\VST Plug-ins
D:\VST Plug-ins\EQ\SpinEQ.dll
As an example.
If you're looking at:
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Cubase\vstplugins\Daily Usage Plugins\EQ\SpinEQ.dll
For every plug-in, Otterfan may have finally discovered your problem.
If not, ignore me.
