I've barely touched Tracktion yet, and I'm about to reinstall Windoze and give it a good hard go, but it would be interesting to me to know who here is a pro and who is a hobbyist, on both sides of the fence in this debate, if you'll indulge me...
Me personally? I'm in between at the moment - I've got a project studio at home, and I've started producing people for money, as well as writing jingles (about 20 now, I guess), and I've recorded a couple of albums at home. I've also been working in a pro studio, as engineer/backing vocalist/keyboard player/programmer/bad percussionist...
The only reason I don't consider myself a full pro yet is that I still get probably 60-70% of my income from gigs - when that eventually goes down to around 10-20% I'll call myself a pro...
Anyway, I know Lunch is a rank amateur - what about the rest of you?

"pro" means you earn a living at it, right?
At the moment a lot of my work is either pure GM midi programming (for which I still use Cubase VST) or pure audio editing (Soundforge 7) but I have used Tracktion for quite a few paid jobs now and it hasn't let me down yet..

Now, Barbarossa, you want to know how we navigate quickly? Well, somebody already mentioned the scroll wheel. Plus, learn the hotkeys, they make it so much easier. I get around fine in Tracktion. I'll admit, knowing PT pretty well, there are a few things that I like about getting around in PT, but nothing significant. I have no gripes about getting around in Tracktion.
So why is my defending the navigation wrong? Why is it a negative aspect? Oh, I forgot, YOU don't like it. So that must be the case for everyone, right? Uh, WRONG! I don't have ANY video, nagivation, etc. There's not a problem to fix in the way you are saying. I'm not saying that it's perfect, as I know some people have issues. But your video issues come down many times to the hardware on your system, and the setup. Stop letting your opinion get in the way of things.
We defend T because people like you unfairly criticize T. You call it amateur because it doesn't have what YOU consider pro, and so it must be so. But your thinking is flawed. There are many professionals here who would disagree with you. Yeah, I'm one of them. I work well with it because I know my tools. I've spent alot of money and time to learn them. I can run Tracktion in a studio environment as well as PT. And get the same results.
I will concede that our argument has been the one developer. It is just now that we learn it's changed. Who knows if it's a new development or not. No way of knowing. But in that light, there's no way of knowing how familiar the new devs are yet. I wouldn't want them to just jump in and start changing things.
But then again, I don't really know the whole situation. But here's my view on it. I would like to see more updates. I have stated here that Mackie has been a bit lacking in the communication of update progress. I want to see the new plug-ins also. But the defensivness of these posts come from people coming in here and flipping out saying that Tracktion has been abandoned, and saying that it doesn't get attention because it's not "professional". This is simply not true, and worthy of defending. People stating opinions as facts.
I'm done. I've made my points. I find not reason to keep defending them against useless arguments. If you want to debate, fine. If I have time, I may post back, but I've got family in town this weekend so I can't say for sure. Some things have happened the past few days that can't be said, and I have to tend to life's little problems. Peace, ya'll.

Barbarossa- I already addressed those concerns. I don't blindly defend Tracktion-- every single defence I make of Tracktion isn't some sort of rabid 'fanboi-ism', it's a conclusion reached by level-headed thinking. It's the whiners who get rabid and make little sense.
If you can't work 30 Tracks using the existing system, then you're somebody who's better suited to something like Logic's mixer view. Which is fine, and bazillions of professionals AND hobbyists use Logic. If that's what you prefer, why not use it?
You can work around 30 tracks in Tracktion just fine. I WOULD like more features (as already mentioned earlier... which you probably didn't notice because you're too busy 'blindly attacking' T ) like lockable track and filter size, but even without, it can be easily done.
Philip- now you're the ex-head of leaving witty signature lines.

I make my living from art and music combined and have worked mostly at home and at a few studios in Nashville (1991 - 2002) doing late night and weekend sessions.
I use Tracktion and, increasingly, Live rewired together. Great combination.
Of course, it would be even better to see Tracktion incorporate the features that have been requested here for more than a year. This is where Live gets it right: better midi, more automation options, useful time stretching with warp markers, creative envelopes and a beautifully simple (but feature rich) drag and drop sampler and drum machine. Wrap that up in Tracktion's GUI and we should have something fantastic.
I also have some new music on my site. Experimental works in progress really but I'm having fun.
