I'm new at this also!...surprised you did'nt get a reply...& (Sorry if I'm stating the obvious ):During recording one NEEDS to be off the net and have all
virus catchers, pop-up blockers and firewalls OFF and anything else you can think of that uses CPU...& use EasyCleaner(donationware)to clean registry often helps...if all that fails an extra 512 Ram may be the ticket to sparkling takes. If I'm missing the boat on this someone please let me know.I'm using xp home sp-2 and that seems to suck about 256 ram just to run.

Yep, i'll be upping my ram for sure. I'm never online while recording. Have a hard enough time walking and chewing gum. However I did try unpluging my either net conntect and got the same result. I did read about conflicting irq's. fond some programs that i didn't need to run *(never use)* and disabled them)* now i have to figure out how to bring them back incase i ever do, don't think i will. The poping has subsided but i use more midi now than audio import. I also am just tracking what I can for now, till this is perfected and running thru my mixer into my BR-8. that'll do for now i guess. Acutall the sound is awesome. but I would like to use the computer more for the multi tracking. haven't had much more poping and clicking since i stopped live record or importing audio clips (percusion loops). Thanks for the reply...

Also CPU usage was at a minimum. *so said the meter?*

I see...however CPU and RAM are 2 different beasts( I have no idea what You know or don't know so I'll just throw some usefull ideas at you just in case it turns on a light)...if you do'nt have Easy Cleaner 2 (free on the web) you should get it i've been running it weekly and I keep deleting registry junk with it and it ( along with Error Guard)keeps my operating system as efficient as when brand new....I also have Freeram pro 1.50 on all the time ( also free at www.download.com (http://www.download.com)) keeps my ram clean of buffered junk and I'm happy with that though I haven't exprimented enough with it on then off to REALLY know if it makes a difference , but so far it seems to help so I leave it on and it tells me how much free ram I have( not CPU)...Recording analog is very CPU intensive and Iwonder if anyone out there has multitrack recorded successfully with 512 ram.... and thank you for the RTPM tip that was the key to solving my ST2 problem once I managed to load some samples into the instruments folder. By the way ERROR GUARD is NOT recommended by microsoft and they deny it does anything, but I know that my computer ends up freezing like your ST2 did if I don't use it regularly to remove EXHAUSTIVE registry CHECKS.... it all sounds a bit like witchcraft does'nt it. and Last but not least important : always defragment the drive before serious recording sessions... hope one or two of these Ideas help you out...CU later!

Excellent! FYI, I have (at best) an intermeadiat knowlage of computer and am a rookie at recording, especially with a computer. I have just downloaded the recomended tools. going to install and I'll let ya know what happened. Heh.. witchcraft indeed

Outstanding recomendations thank you. very much notice the difference! installed both programs. Very nice...

I am running a Dell System. 2.4g 512 ram (upgrading to a gig today) p4 system. i'm using a soundblaster audigy 2ZS platnium with io drive. all works pretty well but i read that the AMD processor works quite well for sound. It will take a few months but i'm building a box for recording and other music applications. This box will me max'd ram. Still not sure about sound card though. (along with other stuff) any suggestions on sound card?

Well it's off to bed. I'm at the begining of my 4 day on. work 4 days off 4 days. very long shifts so i pretty much pass out on my work days, but i am 4 days with music

helo again steve, I'm one one of those cats who enjoys helping people who help themselves, and I'm always looking for new info to make MY GEAR sound better so I found this link after reading your last reply ( it's for Cubase people not TRACKTION but hey! what's good for the gander might be good for th'goose. http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8692 (http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=8692) check out " help for newbies" Level heads will prevail... points 2, 6 and 7... the info is really well organized and to the point...
I agree , your AMD athlon 2.4 GHz is a really good place to start for sound. I really don't know anything about your soundblaster card though,?? if it's just a game card that came with the PC It will never make you happy, lots of clicks and pops and the like will happen for sure : look for a card that comes with ASIO buffers they are what you need for serious recording...I've made so many of these mistakes that I'm slowly becoming an expert at what not to do. lol
I'm really happy with My TRAVELER firewire rackmounted sound card but it was very expensive... reading the latest comparative reviews before buying is a must... by the way 4 days on and 4 days off is kinda the dream day job for a musician ... read and learn while the money is gathering interest...it took me a year to decide on a card

Ok, sorry it's been so long... I just had to say THANK YOU! once again. the memfree program and the clean sweep has made "all" the difference. I've been so busy organizing (getting ready for the new machine) and actually being able to record with ease I neglected to get back and give my Humble Thanks! I'm going to cruise the Traction board and State just what happened here and this worked for me well. I'll keep ya updated on progress and my new site will be up and running soon. I have had this domain for many years ( http://www.dragonplanet.com ) for many years I'm going thru a total revamp and going to have some of my recordings for download, along with some other local musicians. BTW, thanks for the link, very informative and you must admit comical. the person starting the thread is very helpful if you take the time to try your self to make it work. there was more scuttle than actual tech questions and assist. Some I found very humorus (but i'm kinda sick that way)

Although SampleTank 2 isn't freezing up for me in Tracktion, I AM having tons of trouble with SampleTank continuing to play notes forever after I hit stop. These hanging notes are driving me nuts. Any suggestions? I DO have my preferences set to set an "All MIDI off" message upon stopping of playback, so why isn't SampleTank stopping everything. It's especially bad about stopping its drum loops.

Are you using any other filters with ST2 on that track? Or are your sustain and delay settings set low? and... forever as constant loop? I'll try to replicate this eve and let you know. got some honey do's the eve, but i'll be recording the rest of the night tonight. I'll give it a shot for ya...

No other filters. FYI, I have SampleTank on one track all by itself, and then all my MIDI tracks are set to funnel into the SampleTank track. I'm just using presets from SampleTank -- nothing tweaked.

Forgive my taking so long to get back on this subject. Hmmm never tried that before. I could not reproduce this problem (even with delay and sustain tweaked on full). I am on my four days on (work four days off four days) but i will try this and get back in a day or so. I am working on a few projects and on 5 tracks i'm running ST2 on each of these midi and 3 live audio, with 4 looped percussion tracks. with no problems. This got me curious now. Wonder if jackyjop is monitoring this. let me know if you catch anything to cure this. I'll try this funneling of tracks. how do you do this?

Well, for example, I'll put SampleTank by itself on Track 1. And then I'll record the MIDI on Tracks 2-17, but set the destination track for each of those tracks to be track 1. So all the MIDI is getting rerouted to Track 1. I think that's a technique that many people use to send lots of tracks to one plug-in. Another technique is to make it into a rack, but others on this list have reported latency issues with racks, so I chose the former option. How do you send all your tracks to the same SampleTank instance? Is there another technique I'm unaware of?
