Could it be this? Pop music=marketing team and making as much money as they can and not thinking about art and/or love for music. Alternative/indie music=more about art and love for music, and there is not too much marketing or marketing teams involved?

Yes but by whom. Most often the genre name is invented by overzealous music press journalists, who also act kinda like marketing dept for few genres or subgenres they like (senslesly repeating the name they or some other journalist invented in articles and reviews). In most cases that kind of marketing is quite uneffective and detached from inner life of the scene. OTOH it's still more efficient than "marketing" done by the scene insiders.

Besides, pop music type marketing doesen't market genres but single acts.
