I guessed that it is patch dependant, but even so when I drop Proteus onto a track in an empty edit with the default Grand Piano, the CPU jumps to about 50% before I play a note. Some patches can max out the CPU with a couple of notes! (The machine is a socket 754 Sempron 3000, so shouldn't be a slouch.)

I did build a PC with 1820m and a sempron 3100 overclocked
from 1800-2400, I can confirm your troubles, EX is a nice
sampler but it is the most hungrig VSTi I ever tried, and
the card and it´s lousy drivers make this even worse, the
system was useless realy, not able to do a real time busy
piano playing with two hands, unless latenzy was set to
over 20 mS, but as soon I installed a RME card (HDSP9652)
I could do the same things at 6 mS with no problems, the
drivers are far from pro level, we use now only as a EX-dongle,
and for the converters, (lightpibed to/from RME),
