Audio device flipping out on my new G5 iMac

Hi Guys,

I'm experiencing some glitchy behaviour in T2 with my new setup for which I would value your assistance.

Recently I upgraded to a new 20" G5 iMac, replacing my trusty old G4 700

With my old computer I would occasionally get complete audio cutouts. Everything in T2 on the screen operates as normal but silence only through the sound card. At the time I put these problems down to Sampletank 2 XL, which is my main sound library, although I'm not certain this was the cause. From memory I would delete the filter and replace it and this would kickstart the audio again, although it didn't happen often.

On my new computer it's happening all the time now :(

The sound device is a Tascam US-428. At first I thought that it was a driver issue but yesterday I worked for hours with the Tascam and my Pod setting up guitar sounds. The audio never cut out once so it's a 'within Tracktion' issue.

I have found when the audio cuts out I can get it going again by clicking 'restart audio device' on the settings page. The other day I spent the afternoon working on a jingle and had to restart the Tascam maybe a dozen times, a major drag and interuption to workflow. I was working alone but this would be even more of an inconvenience if I was recording a client

The problem is not a CPU issue as both Tracktion's CPU meter and menu meters indicate only slight CPU load when this occurs. It can't be a hard drive speed issue either because the (!) symbol doesn't appear when the audio cuts out. I've tried changing latency settings as well to no effect. It might be a Sampletank issue perhaps although tonight it happened while only mixing a half a dozen audio files with a single instance of Ambience in the output section

Could anyone suggest a way that I could proceed to solve this issue, or do any of you have an idea what could be causing this?

As always I would very much appreciate any assistance anyone could offer :)

Thanks in advance :D

Actually the problem has appeared now using iTunes so it's not a Traction only issue. Time to do a bit more support seaching.

I'd still welcome any advice though :)

Thanks

Some of this is probably obvious, but I'll write it anyway. I've never used the Tascam, so I can't comment on that, except that, if I remember right, it's USB? Is it connected through a hub or to a built-in port? I'd try removing all other USB devices to see if it makes a difference and connect it directly to the Mac. And if there are any drivers for the Tascam, see if there are newer ones available. Also, you may want to try recording with the built-in audio just to make absolutely sure it's related to the Tascam and not another system issue. List your system specs here and maybe it will give us more ideas. I can tell you that IK Multimedia apps have been more touchy than others for me, but they seem to run better now that I've doubled my system ram.

Thanks for your reply mikebeck :)

Yes, the Tascam is a USB device. One thing I thought my be contrinuting to my problems is that the Tascam is a USB 1 device (I think) and the new ports on the G5 are USB 2 (except for the ports on the keyboard which are USB 1) Perhaps this might be relevant.

I'd really like to upgrade to a firewire interface but finances wont allow right now, just got the new computer after all :hihi:

The Tascam is conected directly to the Mac at present (same as on my old Mac). The only other USB devices conected are the keyboard, mouse and printer. The printer is generally off while I'm recording.

I have the latest drivers installed for the US-428 although this driver has not been updated in ages by Tascam; not since the Panther OS I think. I think they will eventually discontinue the US-428 although it is still currently available.

I'll experiment with recording/playing back with built in audio to check if it's not a system related issue as you've suggested :)

Here are the main specs of my setup:-

iMac G5 (20-inch iSight)
OS X 10.4.3
Processor Speed: 2.1 GHz
Cache: 64K (instruction), 32K (data) L1, 512k backside (1:1) L2
System Bus: 700 MHz
Hard Drive: 250 GB 7200-rpm
External Drive for audio streaming: 160 GB 7200-rpm
Media: 8x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Peripherals: Apple Remote, Apple Keyboard, Logitech MX1000 Mouse, Tascam US-428 and HP Laserjet printer
Logicboard RAM: 512 MB
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon X600 XT (PCI-Express)
Graphics Memory: 128 MB DDR
USB: 3 - 480 MBit/s plus 2 ports on the keyboard
FireWire: 2 - 400 MBit/s
Main Music Software - Traction 2 and Sampletank 2 XL

Thanks again for your help. Hopefully I'll get this issue sorted 8)

I can only think of two things right now - the ram is on the light side (1gb or more would be a big help) and the Tascam. The rest of your system seems more than good enough to me. I'll assume you've repaired permissions (?) and have the 3.2.3 Tascam driver installed. I use a firewire audio interface, but I just got a Line6 Toneport than runs on USB, and so far it's worked great. From your last post I am assuming your external drive is firewire. I saw on the Tascam site that the driver says it's "Tiger Compatible" which usually means, to me, that it's an early release that might need fixing. I'd be trying the internal audio method at this point just to see if the problem goes away. Or if you're recording 24 bit with high khz resolution, maybe try 16 bit 44.1khz to see if that helps. Good luck! Let us know what happens. I have this combination of software working fine on my Powerbook, so you should be able to see good results, too.

Thanks man, I appreciate your help, especially on Christmas day :)

With your help I've sussed out the problem and minimized it's impact.

As you suggested, I did think of the ram situation but menu meters displays heaps of available ram when T2/ Sampletank is running so it had to be something else. It could have been the Tascam driver/Tiger combination although I had Tiger on my old iMac G4 700 and had less problems then.

I conducted a little experiment and loaded a midi file into T2 with eight instances of Sampletank 2 playing various instruments along with two instances of CM 101.

Menu meters showed the CPU was cruising at around 60% with the ocasional spike up to 90%. There were a few crackles in the audio. In this situation I would normaly have frozen or rendered tracks by this stage to ease the load on the CPU. Used memory was 360 MB with 152 MB free.

I maxed out the memory of my old computer to 768 MB and intended to upgrade the G5 to 1.5 GB. However on these figures it seems that my system is not starving for RAM at 512 MB :?

The latest 3.2.3 Tascam driver is installed and the above experiment playing through built in Audio plays perfectly so it's got to be the Tascam drivers

I routinely repair permissions as well, at least weekly as part of my backup proceedure.

My external drive is a Lacie Porsche firwire, which has performed well for me.

I don't fancy the chances of an updated driver from Tascam any time soon so it's time to sweet talk the wife into letting me buy a firewire interface

I am using 24 bit 41,000khz resolution in T2 (the US-428 supports up to 24 bit 48,000 khz) so I could scale this back. However, I used the same settings on my old G4 with less hassles. Really the G5 should smoke my old computer.

Incredibly, it seems that the US-428 performs better when plugged into the keyboard USB port. I speculate that this must be because the Tascam is a USB 1 device and therefore 'likes' this port better than the USB 2 ones on the back of the G5 :-o

Thanks again for your help mikebeck, culprit found :)

Are the USB 2.0 ports on the Mac backwards campatable?
Just trying to learn about recording, that is if my head is not too hard.

Hey MarioC,

Yes, the USB 2 ports on the Mac are backwards compatible.

Initially I had the US-428 plugged into one of these ports, but the performance was glitchy as I previously described.

The unit is now perfoming better plugged into one of the two USB 1 port on the keyboard, strange but true

I'm still getting the ocassional audio glitch (clicks and audio cutting out etc) but way less than when the unit was plugged into one of the USB 2 ports.

Eventually, I will replace the US-428 with something like the Tascam FW-1082 which also has Mackie contol surface emulation and so will solve a couple of issues for me; seeing T2 has no US-428 contol surface support at this stage :(

Cheers All

Did you try another USB cable?
I recently experienced similar problems (I'm on a PC, but anyways...) with my (usually trusty) Edirol PCR A30 (USB audio + MIDI keyboard). Switched the USB cable, problems gone. Never had that before, but sometimes USB cables seem to be bad.

Thanks Sascha,

I'll give that a whirl also :)

Hey Steve, some nice PDFs you got on your site (guitar player and teacher here as well).
Would like to get back to you one day (I got some schematics too) - right now I'm leaving for 6 days of touring, maybe in january.

Hey Sascha,
Thanks man. Yeah that would be cool, feel free to contact me anytime :)

By the way Sascha, you're a genious :!:
The problem I was having with the US-428 was indeed a faulty USB cable

You'd think that after thirty years experience as a rock guitarist I'd be familiar with the old 'dodgy lead' scenario

Thanks again Mikebeck, MarioC and Sascha for your suggestions and help in sorting out this issue.

I love this forum :D

Glad it helped.
Now on to some questionable touring...

Wish you folks the best of all times.

Glad it's working. A cable, huh? Wow. Well, that's pretty good news, after all! Wish I'd have thought of that much sooner...
